Voices of the Community: Toya Delazy
In this instalment of Beatport's ‘Voices of the Community’ series, Toya Delazy offers an insight into the conception of the Afrorave genre. Exploring the emotional core of her work, Toya explains how vulnerability plays a crucial role in conveying raw energy and emotion.
In the process of making this music, Toya has also been on a journey of healing and self-discovery, reclaiming and reaffirming her identity by blending her love for contemporary music with the richness of her Zulu heritage, language and storytelling.
Zulu musician Toya Delazy has been smashing down musical and cultural boundaries with aplomb, playing sold out shows across London, to Glastonbury, Mixmag or Keep Hush. From hefty 200bpm pounding to extraordinarily complex polyrhythms, her beats and rhymes are multilingual, multicultural, and multidimensional.
Catch Toya Delazy at an upcoming show:
- Shindig Festival, Wiltshire - 23rd May, 2025
- B-Sides Festival, Luzern - 21st June, 2025
