Between Vines and Voltage: Vasil Ivanov - The Editor’s Live Session in Portugal’s Douro Valley

There are places where music feels less like something being performed and more like something that already belongs to the landscape.

For Vasil Ivanov - The Editor, Portugal’s Douro Valley became exactly that kind of place.

Surrounded by vineyards, steep hills and the winding Douro River, Bulgarian electronic music artist Vasil Ivanov - The Editor brought his live electronic setup into one of Portugal’s most distinctive landscapes for a new chapter of Ultra Collective Sessions.

Filmed at Era Uma Vez no Douro, the session was brought to life with the support and hospitality of Pedro and Nuno, whose local knowledge and connection to the region helped transform the idea into a real experience in the heart of the Douro Valley. Grapeland Adventure Tourism joined the project as a logistics partner, while the session was presented in collaboration with Clubbing TV.

The idea behind the series is simple: take electronic music outside its conventional environment and allow the location itself to become part of the performance.

Rather than treating the landscape merely as a backdrop, the Douro Valley session was conceived as a dialogue between sound and place.

Electronic Music Outside the Club

Electronic music has always been closely connected to spaces, from dark warehouses and clubs to festivals and increasingly ambitious audiovisual productions.

But removing it from those environments changes the way we listen.

In the Douro Valley, there was no dancefloor and no traditional stage. Instead, the surrounding landscape became part of the atmosphere of the performance.

For Vasil Ivanov - The Editor, whose music moves between melodic techno, cinematic electronics and analog-driven sound design, this created an opportunity to explore another side of electronic performance, one based as much on immersion and emotion as on energy.

The result sits somewhere between a live set, a travel document and a cinematic electronic music session.

The Philosophy Behind Ultra Collective Sessions

The Douro Valley performance is part of the broader Ultra Collective Sessions concept, a series built around presenting electronic artists in locations with their own visual and cultural identity.

The project deliberately moves away from the traditional DJ-booth format.

Instead, each session asks a different question:

What happens when the environment becomes part of the music?

Natural landscapes, architecture and culturally significant locations can completely change the emotional context of a track. A piece written in the studio can suddenly feel different when performed beneath an open sky, surrounded by mountains, vineyards or historic architecture.

That relationship between electronic sound and physical space has gradually become one of the central ideas behind the series.

Once Upon a Time in Douro

The title of the session, Once Upon a Time in Douro, reflects both the location and the almost cinematic quality of the experience.

Recorded at Era Uma Vez no Douro, the performance brought together live electronics, synthesizers and the timeless landscape of northern Portugal.

But the session was also a collaborative effort. Pedro and Nuno played an important role in making the project possible, welcoming the team to the region and helping bring the production to life. Together with the logistical support of Grapeland Adventure Tourism, their involvement allowed Ultra Collective Sessions to become part of the Douro landscape rather than simply arrive there as an outside production.

The video production was led by Rosen Dukov / Deffecto, capturing the relationship between the performance and its surroundings.

From the Studio to the Landscape

For Vasil Ivanov - The Editor, live performance is increasingly about finding a balance between technology and spontaneity.

Rather than simply reproducing finished studio tracks, the live format allows musical elements to be reshaped in real time, creating a version of the music that belongs specifically to that moment.

And in the Douro Valley, that moment became inseparable from its surroundings.

The warm Portuguese landscape provided an unexpected contrast to the darker and more melancholic character often found in Vasil Ivanov - The Editor’s productions. Instead of fighting that contrast, the session embraces it, with cinematic electronic music unfolding against one of Europe’s most recognizable wine regions.

A Different Kind of Electronic Journey

The Douro Valley session also reflects a wider evolution in electronic music culture.

Artists are increasingly exploring formats beyond the traditional club and festival circuit, combining music with film, architecture, travel and location-based storytelling.

For Ultra Collective, this is where the Sessions project is heading.

Not simply toward bigger stages, but toward places that can give the music a different meaning.

Sometimes that might be a historic building. Sometimes a city. Sometimes a landscape thousands of kilometres away from the studio.

And sometimes it is a quiet hillside above the Douro River, where synthesizers, electronic rhythms and Portuguese vineyards unexpectedly find themselves speaking the same language.
