Curation Picks: Donato Dozzy - Astro

"Astro" takes a beat from an Italian theme song for a Japanese robot cartoon and drops it into one of Donato Dozzy’s spacious, hypnotic grooves. The rhythm has a slightly unusual swing to it, giving the track more movement than his more austere work, while layers of synths drift around it without ever crowding the groove. There’s something playful about hearing such an unlikely source turned into Dozzy material, but he keeps the reference subtle. What starts as a childhood record becomes a strange little piece of techno that feels both familiar and completely out of place.
