Curation Picks: Jonathan Kaspar, Bákayan - The Reason Why

Jonathan Kaspar and Bákayan’s “The Reason Why” – the title-track off Kaspar's new Crosstown Rebels EP – finds its pull in restraint. Built around a deep, unhurried groove, the track gives Bákayan’s smoky vocal plenty of room to breathe, its warmth cutting through Kaspar’s sleek, nocturnal production without ever overwhelming it.

Coming in at 123 BPM, it moves with the measured confidence of a record designed for the deeper end of the dance floor, gradually drawing you further into its hypnotic atmosphere. There’s a subtle tension between the track’s club functionality and its more soulful instincts, and it’s this balance that makes “The Reason Why” particularly effective. Less interested in a big payoff than sustained mood, Kaspar delivers a beautifully understated piece of late-night house music.
