Ahead of her performance at Miller & Beatport's 'Miller Mix' show in Johannesburg on December 7th, rising African dance music DJ Shamiso introduces us to some of her country's most innovative and soul-stirring tracks.

I am extremely thrilled to share this playlist with you. I have created a mix that honours Afrocentric rhythms, which explore styles like Afro Tech and Afro House. My journey as a curator focuses on breaking barriers and reshaping the perception of African Electronic Music worldwide. For me, it's not just about spinning tracks—it's about creating a space where culture, sound, and innovation collide.

This playlist focuses on rhythm, energy, and connection as its main theme. These songs capture the essence of African Electronic Music that I adore: lively, soulful, and with a groove that resonates with the body. Each beat exudes a feeling of exploration, whether it's the natural tones of Afro House or the innovative vibes of Afro Tech. Every song is meticulously chosen to bring you on an emotional journey, aiming to evoke the same alive, free, and sound-immersed feelings I experience when I'm behind the decks.

Recently, I've been diving deep into new releases from both established and up-and-coming artists. The Afro Tech scene is filled with new energy, and I am always motivated by those around me who are pushing boundaries. I have been participating in amazing events, absorbing the atmosphere, and networking with creators who share the same passion for the culture as me.

Looking ahead, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of expansion. I'm excited to continue curating and playing music that challenges the status quo, while bringing the power of African sounds to the world stage. On top of that, I'm also working on something very close to my heart — my first EP, which I'm planning to release in 2025. It's been a journey of self-discovery and creative exploration, and I can't wait to share it with all of you.

What I love about it is how it effortlessly captures a feeling of nostalgia and longing, while still keeping you moving with its infectious bassline and smooth percussion. The production makes it a standout track for anyone who enjoys the evolving sounds of African Electronic music, particularly 3 Step.

Euggy, Argento Dust, Nyamal Nyang — Dhurman

The percussion is full of life rich, organic, and driving, while the synths and melodic elements slowly build, creating a soundscape that feels immersive and hypnotic. The incorporation of the vocals is especially captivating. It is for anyone who loves music with cultural depth and authenticity — Dhurman is a powerful example of how modern electronic music can honour and elevate traditional African sounds.

Karyendasoul - The Warrior’s Prayer

There’s a sense of ceremonial movement in it — something ancient yet timeless that taps into universal themes of struggle, perseverance, and victory. I also love how Karyendasoul integrates various African-inspired sounds, giving it a rich cultural texture while still keeping it fresh and danceable. It's the kind of song that you feel in your chest, not just your ears. There’s something therapeutic about surrendering to the rhythm and feeling connected to something larger than yourself.

Emmanuel Jal, Check B - Hey Mama (Da Capo’s Touch)

The original song by Emmanuel Jal already has a deep resonance, as he sings about his relationship with his mother and his appreciation for all she’s done. There's a rich, organic quality to the rhythm that brings the whole track to life, and the deep, atmospheric textures Da Capo layers into the remix draw you in from the very first beat. This is a beautiful fusion of African storytelling, emotional depth, and incredible production.

Jerk House Connection, Akram Sedkaoui - Each and Every Day (Life Goes On) [Da Capo & Morda Remix]

This remix by Da Capo and Morda takes the original's uplifting spirit and infuses it with a deeper, more hypnotic vibe, making it a track that resonates on both the dance floor and on a more personal, introspective level. Caiiro - iKoro

iKoro is a standout example of how Afro House can transcend being just a genre for dancing and become a deeper, more immersive experience. Caiiro's ability to blend traditional African rhythms with cutting-edge electronic production is what makes this track so special. The synths and pads create this almost celestial space around the groove, which gives the song a sense of depth and immersion.

Vanco, Ahmed Sosso - Keladi

Keladi is a standout Afro Tech track that seamlessly blends rich, rhythmic percussion with Ahmed Sosso’s captivating vocals. The track’s hypnotic beat and intricate layering create a deep, immersive groove that pulls you in, making it ideal for the dance floor.

Afrikan Roots, Jive, Vincent Methe Musique - Xonga (feat 9umba & DJ Buckz)

The vocals inject the track with a distinct flavour, combining soulful and rhythmic flows with catchy chants. What also makes this track stand out is its versatility. "In The Den" takes me back to my first Kunye in February 2022, where the track was the soundtrack to a night full of energy and connection. Every time I listen to it, new elements reveal themselves — from the subtle synth textures to the intricate percussion that keep it fresh and exciting, even after all these years. The basslines, rhythms, and subtle vocals create a layered, immersive listening experience.
