Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – Becoming Ferromagnetic [Ghostly International]
Following on with her incredible album ‘The Mosaic Of Transformation’ in 2020, Kaitlyn returns to Ghostly with blinder. ‘Becoming Ferromagnetic’ layers glassy plucks and beautiful textures against what sounds almost like church organs. The twirling body in the cover art is a great representation of the feeling this track evokes; floating outside.
Calimex Mental Implant Corp. – Paracruise Waffles [Nightwind Records]
Here we find Legowelt under one of his many, many guises on his own Nightwind Records label. Bearing all of the hallmarks of what you’d expect from Legowelt, we have magical, analog synth melodies with that classic ‘recorded to tape’ aesthetic. The whole release is great stuff, but this track has a groove and bassline that make it stand out from the rest.
The Humble Bee – Other Sleepers [Astral Industries]
We’ll start by saying just check out the whole album. Once again Astral Industries have found an absolute gem in the form of The Humble Bee and every track on ‘A Miscellany For The Quiet Hours’ is stunning. ‘Other Sleepers’ has a grainy, melancholy sway to it that reminds of The Caretaker while being a little more hopeful. Ambient bliss for those quiet hours indeed.
PYTKO – Save My Day (DJ Python ‘Nice’ Remix) [Phantasy Sound]
Low-tempo, vocal loveliness here from PYTKO and DJ Python. Soft percussion and wide synth swells all litter the stereo field while a wistful vocal comes in and out of view. This has shades of Herbert and Dani Siciliano’s work, which is a huge compliment. Check it out!
Lemma – Marine Snow Nocturne [Delsin]
A significantly darker and bleepier effort here from Lemma. Deep diving, nautical themes with an almost whale-song-like melody. This, paired with the noise washes and echo-location-like pinging, gets you set for a journey below the depths.
Lone – Coming Into Being And Passing Away [Greco-Roman]
If you’re going to call your track ‘Coming Into Being And Passing Away’, you better have a lofty enough tune to back it up. Thankfully, Lone is at the controls here. Angelic strings and lush pads a-penty, this is one for gazing up into the heavens on a sunny day. Lovely stuff.
Tyler Friedman – Epiphytic A1 [Kontra Musik]
Arpeggiated goodness here from Tyler Friedman on Kontra. Seemingly ever-rising, the main riff of the track starts off unassumingly before transforming into the sliding, shimmering apparition of itself later in the track. Not one for zoning out to, ‘Epiphytic A1’ has a real and defined pulse to it that will have you bobbing along to its glissando adventures.
