The Sound of the Playa: Kapir’s Burning Man Essentials

Fresh from the release of DÉSIR on SUNCTURE, Kapir revisits the music that shaped some of his favourite moments at Burning Man.
The LA-based producer’s latest single takes a playful approach to house, bringing together organic percussion, French spoken-word vocals, off-kilter synths and a loose, groove-led arrangement. It’s a record that reflects Kapir’s broader approach to electronic music: rhythmic, musical and not overly concerned with staying inside the lines.
For this edition of Dancefloor Essentials, he selects the tracks that stood out during his time on the Playa, with each one tied to a particular moment or memory.
Here, Kapir talks us through the music behind the memories.
This track will always remind me of one of those unexpected Burning Man moments. We were dancing to it on the Playa when suddenly it started raining. Everyone just kept dancing, and somehow the rain made the moment even more special. It’s one of those memories I’ll always associate with this Burn.
Carlita played this at sunrise on the MAXA art car, right after a massive dust storm. After hours of almost zero visibility, the sky finally cleared and the Playa completely changed. Hearing “We Are The People” at that exact moment, surrounded by friends as the sun came up, made it one of the most memorable moments of my Burn.
I played “DÉSIR” during my sunset set at Sound Garden. All my friends came to support me, and we had this beautiful sunset over the Playa while I was playing my own track. Seeing everyone together, dancing to something I created, made it one of the most special and personal moments of my Burn.
This track became the soundtrack to one of the best moments with our camp. We all got together at the Man and filmed some amazing videos while “Burning” was playing. Having the whole crew there, with the Man right behind us, captured exactly what Burning Man is about for me — music, friendship, and sharing these moments together.
