The Bass Jamz co-founder connects the emotion behind his debut album, 'Energy Crew,' with party-starting favorites, formative influences and tracks from close friends.

Newcastle DJ, producer and Bass Jamz co-founder Gaskin steps up for Beatport's Playlist of the Week following the release of his three-part debut album, Energy Crew. Drawing on the records filling his sets, the ten-track selection moves through new favorites, older influences, music from friends and two cuts from the record that he's dedicated to his late label co-founder, Humby.

I’m absolutely buzzing to share these 10 tracks with you all. I’ve selected tracks like I do in my sets; you might know some, you might not, and there’s also a few in there that have helped inspire some of the sounds I’m making at the moment.

I’ve also included two from my new album, Energy Crew, which is definitely my most special release to date. It was written in memory of Bass Jamz co-founder, and one of my best mates since I was three years old, Humby, who sadly passed away about 3 months after we released ‘A Fresh Energy’ - the first ever release on Bass Jamz in 2023. It’s been really hard for us all as a group, but now feels like a special time to release it.

There’s a lot of emotion in there that just kinda poured out of me over the last three to five years to be honest, and it’s been nice to be able to play a lot of the tracks at 528 in Ibiza this summer, which feels like a really special place for us.

So yeah, I really hope you enjoy listening to this selection of tracks from myself, my friends and some people who’ve inspired me to become the artist I am today.

Prospa - Dreams

I’ve been playing this one in every single set recently. It’s actually very similar to the music I’ve been making myself and It resonates a lot with me, especially the more emotional elements. The crowd reactions you get from playing "Dreams" towards the end of a set are also just incredible.

Danny Snowden - Distant Star System

Another one that’s been a fixture in my sets this summer. Danny’s absolutely smashing it at the minute and his sound is really strong. I love that electro style he’s pushing, and the melody in ‘Distant Star System’ is one that whole crowds just chant along to. It’s such a unique track.

Gaskin - Classico

"Classico" felt like a really special one to finish my album, Energy Crew, with. Stee Downes is an absolute legend and he’s responsible for one of my favourite tracks of all time - "Want You In My Soul" – which was also Humby’s funeral song. It actually came together pretty last minute, but I’m so glad we got it done for the album. I now close a lot of my sets with it, and it means so much to me and my family.

Emily Nash - Frequency

I absolutely love this track at the moment and I’ve been playing it either early on, or opening my sets with it. She smashed it on the bassline and it’s another track that gets some unbelievable reactions in the crowd. I only found out about Emily’s music fairly recently, but she’s killing it.

Gaskin - Memories

I made "Memories" in March back in LA with Benni Ola. I remember it was my first US Tour and I felt so inspired just by being out there. I actually played it in LA not long after I’d made it and it went off, which was a great feeling. The old school house feel and the emotion in the track, especially in the build-up moments, is really starting to connect on the dance floor the more I play it.

Nathan Barato - A Little Love

I actually downloaded this for my DC10 debut and I’ve played it ever since. I listened to it a lot when I first started going to Ibiza in 2017 and it’s got that Hot Creations, kinda DC10 sound but also the house-y chords, which work really well in my sets. A lot of people ask me for the ID too, so it’s nice to be able to educate people about older stuff I used to listen to.

Wildish - Sometimes

This is a really special one for me and our Bass Jamz team. Wildish has been grafting away for the last 3-4 years, really focusing on making his own sound and now he’s starting to take it to the next level. We all heard the vocals for the first time after a Bass Jamz event in Italy. I remember we were just sat around backstage in a green room, and the minute it came on, we were all jumping around together. It’s a great track and we’re really proud of it.

Jamie Fielding - Party Over Here (feat. Detroit’s Filthiest)

This is exactly the type of music I’ve always wanted to make. The production is unbelievable, it sounds like it could have been made in the ‘90s, and it just goes off every time I play it. The ultimate party tune that’s created some special moments on the dance floor.

Interplanetary Criminal, Silva Bumpa - HOLD DA PHONE

I absolutely love this one. Obviously, both of them are smashing it and have been for a while, but I remember first hearing it on one of their Instagram Stories after they’d made it together at Miami Music Week and thinking, ‘what is that vocal?’. I’ve absolutely rinsed it in my sets recently, another proper party tune.

Kolombo, Sharam Jey - Nonstop!

I like playing a wide mix of tracks in my sets as a lot of people know, as well as a few curveballs here and there, just like this one. It’s an older track that I’ve listened to for years and it’s definitely one that I reference in some of my own music, especially tracks like "Get Ya Freak On." I take a lot of inspiration from tracks like this more generally, particularly the old school hip-hop vocals and big basslines.
