DONT BLINK: 5 Tracks that changed the way we make music

The German-Estonian duo share their influences.

Good luck finding a more prolific production pair than DONT BLINK. The German-Estonian duo release new music on their imprint LOW CEILING every 3 weeks, while their DJ sets feature 100% their own music. Returning to Adam Beyer’s Truesoul for a fresh cut ‘RELENTLESS BEATS’, they share the 5 tracks that flipped the switch on how they make music.

Addiction

For us, 'Addiction' has always stood out because of its arrangement, especially the breakdowns. They take up more space than the drops, but never lose momentum. The tension builds in a simple, effective way, leading into a clean drop that works without relying on percussion. It’s a great example of how a breakdown can carry just as much weight as the drop itself.

No Paparazzi

'No Paparazzi' was the first track that got us into the indie dance genre. We usually tend to keep adding new sounds out of fear of boredom, but this track showed us how a few well-chosen sounds and a simple arrangement can create a great record. It’s also a good mixing and mastering reference.

Horse Power

Aleks used to play this remix almost every weekend in the club where he was working back in 2010 — around the same time he started making music. That drop never failed on the dancefloor. It taught us how a simple synth hook can drive a crowd wild, and how basic frequency modulation can create enough movement to keep a topline interesting and alive throughout the track. A great timeless trakc, and even after 16 years, this one still rocks.

Motorola

'Motorola' showed us how a vocal hook can become part of the groove itself. It has a clear theme and story that you can understand through just a few simple lines. We later used this idea in our own tracks like “DANCE MORE,” “GIN AND TONIC,” “FULL OR HALF,” and “ITS OUR HOUSE.” This track also introduced us to the call-and-response technique, which we really took advantage of. You can hear this approach in many of our tracks, where different vocal phrases interact with each other rhythmically to create energy and movement.

Thunderstorm

Boris has been an immense inspiration for us in the studio, from his approach to making music to establishing a simple groove and creating diverse, interesting arrangements. He truly showed us how less is more, and played a huge role in how we approach our own production. Like Boris, all of our shows are now 100% our own productions, and we started producing primarily for our sets. Not to get signed to a specific label or fit an algorithm, but to make music dedicated to our tour and the different countries we get to visit and perform in.
