BCee's 12 Essential Liquid Drum & Bass Tracks

B Cee essential liquid dnb tunes
Iconic D&B producer BCee curates a liquid drum & bass playlist celebrating 20 years of Spearhead Records, highlighting the soulful, emotional sound that has defined the label since 2005.

For me, liquid drum & bass has always been about soul and emotion – music that connects both on and off the dance floor. When I started Spearhead Records back in 2005, I wasn’t chasing trends; I just wanted to release music that felt good, that told a story, and that made people feel something. Two decades later, that same ethos still drives everything we do.

The beauty of liquid is its range – it can be uplifting, heartbreaking, or pure euphoria. From the early pioneers who blended soul and breaks to today’s new wave of producers bringing their own flavour, liquid remains the beating heart of drum & bass. For Spearhead Records, I’ve always tried to work with artists who see drum & bass as a lifelong craft, not just a moment. I look for music that moves me – something I can feel in my soul, not just a track with a perfect mixdown. From day one, my rule was simple: if I can still remember it in ten years, it’s worth releasing.

I didn’t know back then that I’d still be here twenty years later, but what’s kept me going is the same thing that started it all – the search for tracks with genuine feeling. It’s not enough for a tune to sound great; it’s got to have soul. It has to make you feel something.

Here are twelve tracks that define what liquid drum & bass means to me – from timeless Spearhead favourites to modern masterpieces that keep the spirit alive.

Spearhead Records' anniversary compilation XX - Celebrating 20 Years of Spearhead Records drops on December 5. Buy it on Beatport.

Alix Perez – Elastic Soul [1985 Music]

The best liquid tune of the last ten years, hands down. It’s the perfect balance of groove, space and feeling. Alix makes everything sound effortless – this one’s pure magic.

L-Side – Never Feels Enough [Spearhead Records]

Part of our 20 Years of Spearhead series and a real standout moment. It’s deep, soulful, heavy and musical all at once – everything I love about L-Side’s production.

The Vanguard Project – Stitches (Calibre Remix) [Spearhead Records]

When Calibre remixed this one, I knew it was special. He stripped it back to its essence and rebuilt it with that unmistakable touch – warm, rolling, timeless.

LSB – PCT [Spearhead Records]

Also taken from the 20 Years of Spearhead project. LSB in his finest form – it’s like a long exhale after a hard day, pure soul-quenching goodness. Every element feels perfectly placed.

Satl – So Much Better [Integral Records]

This one’s got that classic liquid glow. It’s simple, uplifting, and radiates good energy – one of those tracks that reminds you why you love this music.

Ivy Lab – Options [Dirtybird]

The perfect liquid tune. It’s clean, musical and still has that club punch. Ivy Lab have always blurred genres, and this shows how versatile liquid can be. The string sample in this is unreal.

Seba – Change (feat. T.R.A.C. & Sapele) [Spearhead Records]

Following on from his Spearhead LP, Seba returns for his 20 Years of Spearhead offering. Soulful and cinematic with incredible vocal performances – it captures both depth and groove in a way few others can.

DJ Marky, S.P.Y – Mystic Sunset [Innerground Records]

Brazilian sunshine on wax. The groove, percussion and warmth are unbeatable. Marky and S.P.Y at their best – pure joy from start to finish.

Nymfo – Crystal Clear [Spearhead Records]

A tune that still feels as fresh as the day it dropped. Tight drums, subtle emotion and that rolling Spearhead vibe that defined a whole era. Charlotte Haining’s vocal seals the deal.

Technicolour – Winter Rose [Spearhead Records]

Before Technimatic, Pete from Technicolour made this gem – still one of my favourite Spearhead releases ever. Delicate and beautiful, it’s everything liquid should be.

Emba – Mirrors [Spearhead Records]

Emba’s one of the new generation carrying the torch forward. “Mirrors” has that crisp, modern polish but keeps the emotion right at the centre, with Zara Kershaw on vocals.

Redeyes – Poetry In Motion [Spearhead Records]

An old one but a good one, taken from his debut album on Spearhead. The title says it all. Redeyes is a true poet in D&B form – smooth, emotive and endlessly replayable. The perfect closer for this list.
