Playlist of the Week: PhaseOne

PhaseOne
Hey this is PhaseOne, I'm a Producer/DJ from Sydney Australia now residing in Los Angeles. I'm one of the pioneers of the Rocktronic genre (blending Metal and Rock with EDM). I just released my sophomore album TERRANOVA so I wanted to make a beatport chart to celebrate. I run my own record label Sounds Of Mayhem, so I've titled the chart the same as we specialize in releasing the modern sound of heavy dubstep crossing over with rock/metal music. I had to include a few from my recent album too because I'm super proud of it and feel like they're solid contenders for this category.
I wanted to start with the lead single from my album that just came out 'SOS. It embodies everything that I hope for in a rocktronic song; guitars, soaring vocals + heavy screams, huge synths and punchy drums. The chorus on this tune is so catchy it'll leave you humming it for days.
Another great example of using creams over synth sounds. This one is definitely on the heavier side, but nonetheless hits hard on a big sound system. The sound design is top-notch in the modern-day dubstep sound.
I wanted to include this one not only coz it slaps, but HZ is about to release the VIP version of this. You thought this one was hard until you hear the VIP. This original though masters the vocal screams over the drop as that's a hard thing to accomplish well, whereas most dubstep these days, the basses are so distorted it's hard to fit anything else in the frequency spectrum.
Excuse another shameless plug, but this is another fav from my album. This one showcases the more melodic side of the genre. It features the angelic vocals of Micah Martin & a beautiful soaring lead guitar from one of my favourite guitarists, Intervals. This one is a prime example of how the genre can be accessible and 'radio-friendly', so to speak.
I knew I had to sign this 110bpm tune the moment I heard it. The metal riffs are so up my alley, insane guitar work, super tasteful, which then transitions into a "slow dubstep" beat, which complements the earlier composition and rhythm of the earlier metal sections.
This might be one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard haha. This one is also at a slow tempo (112bpm). There's this only saying in the metal world "Slower = Heavier," and I think that can be applied to dubstep too. The slower bpm gives more space for other elements to shine and the overall flow to hit you in the chest.
Another heavy hitter, this one explores tempo changes mid drop, which is a very common thing in metal where the song will have a breakdown, then halfway through it'll get slower. This song does that very tastefully, and the vocals are also top-notch to accompany.
This one explores the more hard dance / raw style of genre blending. MUST DIE! remixed my 2022 hit "World Unknown" and put his signature sound to it. I've always been picky with who I think can do my songs justice in a remix setting, but he crushed this one. A super tasteful upbeat rendition.
This heavy dubstep song features the vocals of Adam from Oceano, one of those iconic deathcore bands that we grew up with in the early 2000s. It's always awesome to see bands and vocalists of that genre be open to collaborating on EDM tunes. Anyway, this song slap,s and the vocals are insanely brutal.
One last shameless plug. This was another single from my album. It was a fun one for me as it's a genre I'd never really touched before. At 125bpm, it leans more on the breakbeat side of things, but I still managed to keep it rocktronic, and Josh from Banks Arcade's vocals solidify that, tying it all together nicely.
