Ewan McVicar Shares 10 Essential Off-Kilter Club Cuts

From his humble Scottish roots, Ewan McVicar has progressed to be one of house music’s true superstars. Best known for euphoric, festival-level hits such as "Heather Park," "Groove Thang," and of course, the once inescapable anthem "Tell Me Something Good," the past few years have seen a dream rise for the DJ and producer.
Nonetheless, McVicar has already proven to be less interested in resting on his laurels, and this summer, is taking time to demonstrate as much interest in turning smaller rooms upside down, as well as demolishing big ones. In May, he made a perhaps unexpected experience on Erol Alkan’s legendary London label, Phantasy. Known to explore some of electronic music’s stranger, more psychedelic corners, McVicar’s two-tracker Careless Drifter/Basic Foundation release is firmly rooted in the spirit of his earliest days on the Scottish rave scene, cutting his teeth with acid house chug and strange, modular experiments; the sort of music that keeps heads down grooving, as well as hands in the air.
Meanwhile, in Ibiza, and alongside outspoken club impresario Man Power, the two have founded OFF BRAND. Taking place at cult club Akasha, the party “gets back to club culture” and a more diverse sound than typically encountered on the island, prizing leftfield selections and longer sets across the house, techno and disco spectrum. PARAMIDA, Roman Flugel and Budino are just some of the selectors appearing over the summer, but of course, McVicar’s esoteric sensibilities will also play a major role in sculpting the sound of a much-needed, truly independent party. In the coming weeks, McVicar will also launch a new label 'Club Knuckles', exploring the sharper, stranger end of his prolific productions.
With all this rolling, McVicar has taken the time to select some of the foundational, unpredictable and downright undeniable tunes that play into a long, steady set.
Speaking about the selection of tracks he put together for us, McVicar had this to say: "Off-Kilter, Off-Barnet, Off-Linear. A collection of tracks I now mainly only get to play in Sub Club in Glasgow. From throwing it down to throwing it up, Chicago royalty to German precision, I've included inspirations that have brought me to this point - releasing on the forever credible Phantasy Sound."
Dig in.
I made this track for when I’m playing all night long, particularly for my second residency in Glasgow's Sub Club this winter. It is for the moment that takes things from the chug to the chaos.
Talking of chug, this is one of my favourite tracks I've ever made. A complete chugosaurus... off-kilter, take your kilt off!
Its 1AM, more drums are creeping in, grooving basslines... a perfect nodder.
Marcellus Pittman is one of my favourite forward-thinking producers, and this is the perfect track to hear when you're walking into a club. If you arrive and this is on, you know you're in for a treat.
Roy Davis Jr., need I say more? Play it anywhere in a set, and it will fit. Beginning, middle, or end... perfect.
This is another one I like to use to pick the club up. That tension tool lets you know we are about to go through the gears.
We are coming to the peak of Mount Peverelist. Locked in low bass, funk freestyle over the top. Classic.
Lost in the sauce by this point, one to let the ears become warm and intrigued.
Hands in the air, straight grooving, shoulder popping, and head noddin’!
Need I say more?
