Piero Pirupa Delivers a Beatport Number 1 with “We Don’t Need”

We catch up with Italian producer and DJ Piero Pirupa, whose Pink Floyd-sampling “We Don’t Need” just hit Beatport’s overall top spot.

Congratulations Piero to your new Beatport number one with “We Don’t Need!” How are you?

Thank you very much! I’m fine, and I’m very happy with this number one. Together with my management and SPINNIN’, we have been working on this project for a long time and all the work that has been done is about to pay off!

The track is based on Pink Floyd’s classic “Another Brick in the Wall,” which in the past has also been remixed by artists such as Eric Prydz and Vintage Culture. What made you want to add your own spin on it?

Honestly, the Prydz version is still one of my all-time favorite tracks. I have the CD at home. Eric Prydz is one of my idols! I grew up with his music, and I wanted to do a version of “Another Brick In The Wall” both because I love Eric’s version and because Pink Floyd is one of the rock bands I listened to the most when I was in high school. At that time, I only listened to rock music, I approached electronic music shortly after, around 15 years old.

You mentioned before that it wasn’t easy to get the track released — it took three years! What were the biggest challenges behind the scene?

Yes, I made this track in December 2016, it was a bootleg that I wanted to play just for me in my DJ sets, then I made some small changes until I got the final version in 2018, and I decided to send it to some DJs like Carl Cox, Fisher and others and all of a sudden they started playing it and then my manager started the process for the sample clearance that we got in 2020. It was a long and not easy process, especially to get approval from Pink Floyd’s management! Then, once we got the ok, Covid arrived, and we had to postpone the release for another two years, but we never gave up, and we have always believed in this project and finally released it at the right time!

One of the many hits you made is “Party Non Stop” which just had its tenth anniversary. How were the last two years for you when the party did, in fact, stop?

Two years of inactivity were too much for me. Let’s say that I rested, I dedicated myself to music, to take care of my mind, body, and soul. I lost 20 kg while training in my house. I made a lot of music, experimenting with everything from techno to minimal, to tech house to pop/EDM, but after all those months at home I started to lose creativity because I get inspired, especially during my travels. Now I’m full of energy and have an incredible desire to travel the world again! I’ve recharged my batteries, and I’m ready for many more years of travel and music!

What are you working on at the moment?

As I told you before, I’ve done so many demos during the pandemic, but in recent months, since I started slowly with the gigs, a lot of creativity has returned to me. In the coming weeks, I have tours in South, Central, and North America coming up, then several dates in Europe during the summer. I have some new tracks to release. In May, I have a single on Musical Freedom, and at the end of June, I have a single with Ben Kim. There will also be remixes of “We Don’t Need” on SPINNIN’ DEEP. I am also planning a release on my label NONSTOP, and we got a showcase at Sonar Off Barcelona in June! Soon I will launch a new project that, unfortunately, I cannot tell you more about. Stay tuned because it will be something big!
