Beatport Launches New Genre: Jackin’ House

The introduction of the genre page creates a new home for the energetic, sample-heavy sound born out of Chicago.

Beatport has added a brand new genre category to the store: Jackin’ House.

Characterised by its spirited attitude, elastic beats, shuffling percussion, booming basslines, and chopped-up samples from styles such as Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz, Swing, Funk, and Disco, Jackin’ House is an essential component of the House music spectrum.

By migrating the Jackin’ House genre from its current home on the store — Funky / Groove / Jackin’ House, which will now live as Funky House — Beatport aims to provide a much-needed destination for this essential and celebrated house music genre and subculture.

Our expert curator has already tagged around 12,000 tracks that will migrate from our House, Funky House, and Tech House sections into our new Jackin’ House genre, with more on the way. We have also spoken to various labels, DJs, distributors, artists, and the dance music communities. And, using their feedback, we are confident that this move will benefit artists, labels, and our customers, by giving Jackin’ House far greater visibility on our store. Additionally, receiving featured spots and reaching the top 10 chart positions within the genre will once again become a coveted position.

Featuring music from artists like Demuir, DJ Heather, Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, and labels like Robsoul Recordings, GLA, Relief, and Purveyor Underground, Jackin’ House represents the refined bounce and attitude of old school Chicago sounds mixed with the modern funk of today’s dance floors.

American DJ/producer Mark Farina stated: “Channeling the old school underground vibes from Chicago, Detroit, and NYC, with some added oomph and funk.”

Jackin’ House expert Demuir, who has been instrumental in getting Beatport’s latest genre up-and-running, added: “I consider Jackin House one of the most innovative and leading-edge genres in electronic music that keeps things fresh and pushing boundaries constantly. I’m happy Beatport is acknowledging and supporting its significance.”

Phil Weeks, founder of the Paris-based label Robsoul Recordings also said: “Back in the day, in the club, when it was time to bring it up with more energy on the dancefloor, we used to say, ‘it’s time to Jack, it’s time to switch gears kind of (and raise the energy of the room).’ But mainly, Jack refers to the driven beats of Chicago House. I’m happy Beatport is putting a spotlight on a genre that represents what we play in the club.”

Beatport Director of Curation & Label Relations Raphael Pujol announced: “The correct representation of the true Jackin’ House sound on Beatport has been a long time coming, and I am thrilled that we have finally made it possible for the community and fans to have a dedicated space on our store for their music.”
