Hiroko Yamamura Incite a “Midwest Panic”

Out now via HE.SHE.THEY, the pair’s new four-track EP is an ode to the acid sounds of the Midwest rave scene.

NYC-based DJ/producer Justin Cudmore and one of Chicago’s top dance floor conductors, Hiroko Yamamura, have come together to create a sharp acid-induced EP titled Midwest Panic — out now via HE.SHE.THEY.

Having previously smashed B2B sets together in both of their cities, the four-track EP from these two long-time friends is an ode to the Midwest rave scene roots. They first got to know one another through their shared experiences growing up in Chicago’s queer scene, and the coming together of these two talented artists has resulted in pure warehouse pandemonium.

The title track and opener, “Midwest Panic,” is a perfectly executed love letter to the sounds of acid, with sturdy drums and catching yet sparse synths and percussion that will never fail to keep you moving. “I’m Not A Trip, I’m A Journey” is another full-body workout with serrated drums and more electrifying acid lines that build with dizzying anticipation.

On the flip side, long-time techno mainstay Heartthrob delivers his remix of “Midwest Panic” with a minimal and atmospheric potency, crafted splendidly with frightful synth designs that will haunt the dance floor. For the final track, Justin Cudmore and Hiroko Yamamura reign back the 303s with “Midwest Panic (Please No Acid Dub),” an arresting rendition of the tune with a chugging and metallic framework.
