Helang on “Hits Different”, Hobbies, and Her Journey to HILOMATIK

From supporting the likes of Lily Palmer at E1 London and Amelie Lens at Echostage DC, Helang has rapidly emerged as a rising talent in the techno scene.

In the midst of her busy schedule, she took the time to answer questions about her personal life, and what brought her to HILOMATIK to release her latest track “Hits Different” from the label’s A-Sides EP.

What are your passions and hobbies outside of music?

I love taking hip hop dance classes, spending quality time with friends, investing in fashion/clothing, and singing karaoke. It’s very important to me that I tap into different outlets or hobbies to keep those creative juices flowing.

If you hadn't become an artist, what job would you have wanted to do?

I probably would be a business owner in some way, shape or form. I march to the beat of my own drum.

Do you practice any sports?

I don’t practice a particular sport but I do enjoy exercising (cardio + weight lifting) during my free time. I also enjoy swimming, particularly in the ocean, so I plan on using my scuba certification more in the near future.

What’s your favorite movie?

The Black Swan. Everything from the plot to cinematography to acting is amazing. I also just love when women take the leading roles in movies.

What’s your ideal type of vacation?

My ideal vacation would be going to a city or region that gives you the best of both worlds — somewhere like a tropical island to get lost in but also has a city to have fun in.

Do you have any pets?

I have a cat (Russian tortoise). Her name is Mimi.

What kind of person are you outside the DJ/producer life?

I am hot-headed, determined, passionate, and loyal. I tend to put my all into what I want to invest in — whether it’s a person, project, or activity.

What does a good night out look like for you?

A good night out would include quality time with friends where we can have wholesome conversations, whether at a (not so loud) bar or someone’s apartment. Then we will go to a dark and intimate rave to dance at.

Do you have any guilty pleasures you would like to confess?

I tend to re-watch the same TV shows or movies over and over again, or listen to the same 5 songs on repeat till I get sick of them.

What famous person do you dream of having dinner with?

Probably Lady Gaga, or The Weeknd. Both are personal inspirations to me when it comes to music.

What brought you to HILOMATIK to release 'Hits Different'?

When I first got into electronic music 12 years ago, I would listen to “Gecko” on repeat. A year ago I opened for Oliver’s HI-LO show in New York. Six months later I sent him some demos and he signed “Hits Different” on the spot.

Oliver is a great artist, he has fun with it and is also just a kind human being.

When you think of HILOMATIK, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

Hard-hitting grooves, womps. Songs that make you want to go hard on the dance floor and lose yourself.

What’s your favorite song among all the HILOMATIK releases (you can’t pick your own!)?

My favorite is probably “Feel The Energy” by HI-LO and Eli Brown.
