After helming his culture-shifting BBC Radio 1 weekly Essential Mix series and decks around the world, Pete Tong is applying his decades of curatorial expertise to his new label, Places & Spaces. It’s a natural next step for the dance/electronic vanguard, who possesses one of the scene’s sharpest ears for what will make dance floors move. No surprise then that its sound will take cues from clubland, championing the “records that define my club sets,” says Tong.
"Places & Spaces is a personal imprint, a private gallery for the records that truly move me. It’s about what excites me, resonates on the dance floor, and lives on in those special places and spaces we call clubs. This label is driven by feeling, not formulas,” he tells Beatportal.
Among them is “Days & Nights,” a titillating Afro house slow burn that has surfaced in several of Tong’s recent club sets and hails from Italian producer AVG and London-based singer-songwriter Obi Franky’s EP of the same name. Listen below.
As Places & Spaces' inaugural release, the Days & Nights EP sets a sophisticated tone for Tong’s imprint. Mounting slowly, steadily, and emphatically, “Days & Nights” takes listeners on a journey amplified by Franky’s piercing vocals, the sheer power of which shines on the acoustic version of the title track. While the self-confident number “Get It” saunters, “Wrong” smoothly picks up the tempo, adding depth and variety to the polished, club-minded sound with which Tong launches an imprint whose influence, like its founder, will be felt in places and spaces across the industry.
