Beatportal Exclusive: Ky William of Andhera Records Talks 50 Releases and the Future of Community-Driven Electronic Music
Andhera Records, the independent label known for its unique sound and community-driven ethos, has reached an exciting milestone: 50 releases. To mark the occasion, we spoke with Ky William, the founder and creative force behind Andhera, to discuss the journey to this point, the challenges, and the exciting future ahead for the label.

The Origins: Fun, Freedom, and a Platform for Artists
When asked how it feels to reach 50 releases, Ky reflects on the journey with humility. “I was hopeful we would get here eventually, but with so many labels around nowadays, it’s not something I thought too much about to begin with. The team and I try to focus on what's in front of us and ensure we do the best job we can, so in the current climate, it’s an honor to reach this number.”
Ky’s vision for Andhera Records was built around a simple yet powerful idea: fun with friends and providing a platform for artists to release music on their own terms. “The vision was honestly just having fun with my friends and creating a home where we could release music whenever we wanted. Having that true freedom to put out whatever we want, whenever we please, was always very comforting for us,” Ky explains. “I also know how hard it can be as an artist trying to break through, so if I can offer a platform to other talented producers and give them a head start, then all the better.”
The label’s name, "Andhera," which means "darkness" in Hindi, was chosen with a mix of thought and serendipity. “Ramsey Neville, the co-founder at the time, had asked his girlfriend to help come up with a name for the label. The label was originally supposed to be a techno label, so she started saying words in Hindi related to the sonics of techno. That one stuck out. Though the label isn’t techno now, I loved the name and decided to keep it.”
The Road to 50 Releases: From Struggles to Triumph
Reaching 50 releases hasn’t just been about the music—it’s been about building a community. “We started to focus more on the community aspect and not just the music itself. We are now hosting events, artist development workshops, and a full merch line that we’ll be rolling out over the next few months. We are very community-focused now and intend to stay that way for years to come,” Ky shares.
Looking back at some standout moments, Ky reflects fondly on one of the label’s early successes: “I think my record ‘Hit It’ holds a special place. It was the first record I put out on my own imprint, and I was blown away by the response. It got supported by all the top touring acts and eventually was the song that led to my debut at Club Space and a release on John Summit’s Experts Only.”
The journey, however, hasn’t been without its challenges. “Getting people to pay attention to the label and the output. Having to build it from the ground up with no network was daunting and a very long process,” Ky admits. But with perseverance, things are starting to shift. “We finally have a following, and the event series and workshops have been huge for our creative freedom and allow us to be more authentic.”
The A&R Process: Sexy, Groovy, and Community-Oriented
One of Andhera’s defining characteristics is its wide-ranging catalog. “You might notice we release a wide variation of music on the label. For me, if it’s sexy, groovy, and can keep the dance floor moving in all environments, it’s for us,” Ky says. But it’s not just about the sound—it’s about the person behind the music. “I also look into who the artist is as a person and what they are doing for the community, not just themselves. We are looking for forward thinkers at Andhera and those who are willing to put others before themselves.”
This philosophy has resonated with listeners, as evidenced by Andhera’s impressive success. With over 2.5 million streams and a Top 50 spot on Beatport’s Tech House chart, the label has earned its place in the electronic music scene. “Consistency, highlighting raw talent, and being persistent are what have driven our success. A lot of success in the industry comes down to the right place at the right time. If you remain persistent for long enough, eventually one song will pop off,” says Ky. “It might take you 2 years, it might take you 10, but that one moment makes it all worth it.”
Creating Impact Beyond the Music
For Ky, success isn’t just measured by streams or chart positions—it’s about the deep connection to the community. “The diverse sounds and attention to the community are what set us apart,” Ky explains. “We will never do anything for numbers or clout. Authenticity is at the core of what we do. It’s the leading factor in every decision we make, and all members of the team live by this outside of Andhera.”
One of the label’s most impactful initiatives has been the “Developed” artist development workshops. “We received almost 200 applications in the first few days after announcing the concept,” Ky recalls. “Anyone can sell tickets and records, but to be in a position where people put their trust in you by dedicating their time to learn and develop, that’s powerful.”
The Andhera Experience: Building a Brand Through Live Events
Andhera Records isn’t just a digital entity—it’s a living, breathing experience. The label has hosted several sold-out events with 300-500 attendees, and they’ve made a name for themselves with their intimate, high-energy gatherings. “We like to create a space where we can book artists we sign to the label and offer them a platform to play out live,” Ky explains. “Getting our community familiar with the artists before we book them for shows is always a great way to give them exposure.”
Andhera’s live events focus on keeping things real, opting for minimal production and high energy over flashy light shows. “You don’t need big lights and signs to throw a memorable party,” Ky says. “We choose our locations wisely, and that’s what makes the vibe special.”
Looking ahead, Andhera is gearing up for another unforgettable show. “We are running back the party with Raw Cuts at Roberta’s Pizza in Brooklyn on April 26. The lineup is myself, Alves, Monty Kiddo, and Van Der Laan. This event was a huge success last year, and we are ready to do it again!”
What’s Next for Andhera?
As Andhera celebrates its 50th release, the label’s future is full of possibilities. “We want to continue with the path we’ve forged but continue to push the boundaries of the events we throw and the reach of the artists we work with,” says Ky.
One exciting project on the horizon is the launch of the label’s clothing line. “I’m always wearing Stussy and Represent, and it would be amazing to collaborate with them. It’s something we’re looking into for the future,” Ky shares.
Looking ahead five years, Andhera Records aims to solidify its place as a major force in the industry. “We hope to continue putting out great music with amazing artists in our community. Along with that, we plan to keep building our event arm, clothing drops, workshops, and grow the Andhera Family.”
A Final Thank You
Ky wraps up the conversation with a heartfelt thank you to the label’s supporters. “A very big thank you is in order. Without everyone, it’s simply not possible. We listen to when you all talk and will continue to do so. Never stop giving us feedback. Many of you even offer to help while wanting nothing in return, and to us, that is everything. Thank you, and cheers to the future.”
Andhera Records has undoubtedly left a lasting mark on the electronic music scene. With a focus on authenticity, community, and artistic freedom, the label is poised to continue making waves for years to come.
