Beatport Creates Standalone Genre Page for Downtempo

Beatport has reclassified Downtempo with its own standalone genre page, now sitting separately from Organic House. 

While sharing many of the same earthly tempos and slow groove qualities with the Organic House genre, Beatport’s team of expert curators has determined that it was finally time for Downtempo to have a genre page of its own.

Lacking a single definition, Downtempo is a collective term that encompasses a multitude of genres and sounds - with binding elements being the slower tempos and a strong emphasis on mellow moods. Ranging from the organic textures of Balearic and Lo-Fi to the beat-driven sounds of Trip-Hop and Chillout, Downtempo music offers a versatile listening experience that resonates on both dance floors and intimate spaces while emphasizing groove and introspection.

After diligently collecting feedback and requests from our global community, Beatport believes that this change will offer extra visibility and feature opportunities to the variety of artists and labels whose music encompasses Downtempo’s warm sonic qualities. 

Prominent labels such as Wonderwheel Recordings, Sol Selectas, Cosmic Awakenings, and Shika Shika have championed this sound, while influential artists like Nicolas Jaar, Chancha Via Circuito, El Búho, Kermesse, Rodrigo Gallardo, and Riyoon continue to push the genre forward.
