After taking the Detroit scene by storm, DJ Holographic has released her debut album, House In The Dark. The long player comes on her recently launched label, Through The Veil.
One core element behind this album is expanding the Black cultural movement known as Afrofuturism. Back when techno was emerging in the warehouses of Detroit, it was all straight men such as Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig forwarding the concept as it pertained to techno. DJ Holographic aims to now reframe the concept through a queer, femme lens.
Another key aspect of the album is DJ Holographic’s experience with astrology and shadow work, both of which have been driving forces in her journey of personal growth.
Reflecting on how those practices influenced the album, DJ Holographic says: “Through healing practices like shadow work, astrology, and more, I’ve found a profound sense of arrival while writing House In The Dark. I’ve stepped into who I’ve always wanted to be as a creative and so much more.”
DJ Holographic’s creative breadth is on full display throughout the album’s 12 tracks, each one named after an astrological sign and in the proper order of the astrological calendar. “Aries,” which is a fire sign, employs incandescent arpeggios and acid synths. “Pisces,” a water sign, features swimming string pads alongside bubbly tuned percussion chords.
