KILIMANJARO has shared his new EP, Makalelo (Origins). The release features four tracks that layer African rhythms on top of historic UK club beats — a sonic snapshot of the Scottish-Zambian artist’s upbringing.
In KILIMANJARO’s native language, Zambian Lozi, “Makalelo” means “beginnings,” and this EP represents a new beginning for the rising artist.
“Makalelo (Origins) EP is the beginning of something special, the evolution and the genesis for what is to come sonically. These tracks have been road-tested and developed worldwide over the past 18 months and have created countless special moments during my shows on dance floors around the globe. I can't wait for you all to hear what we’ve been cooking,” says KILIMANJARO in a press release.
Two tracks from the EP were released as singles prior to the full drop: “The Seeker” and “Come Towards The Light.” The former is an uptempo dance sermon that channels the historic African artform of toasting while moving through a variety of drum foundations. The latter builds a bass-driven four-on-the-floor beat below enraged vocals and seething African songs.
The other cuts, “Run With It” and “We Are Love,” maintain this shared musical atmosphere as well, leaning heavily into electronic sound design for two excellent rave heaters.
Makalelo (Origins) by KILIMANJARO is out now via Capitol Records and Polydor. Buy it on Beatport.
