Supported by Chris Stussy and Josh Baker, ‘Step By Step’ is contemporary tech house music at its finest, marking the start of a huge year for the Dutch producer. Beatportal chats to the rising producer about his release on Three Six Zero Recordings and much more...

‘Step By Step’ is finally out… it’s been hotly anticipated for a while… talk us through the last few months as the track's hype has grown and the countless messages you’ve received about a release date…

The first time I played Step By Step was at You&Me at Cova Santa in Ibiza. It sounded super good on a big sound system, so I instantly knew I was onto something. I kept playing it in every single set and more and more people started to ask me about it. Since then, I have had people on social media, asking me daily, for a release date. Usually, that’s a good sign ;-) .

Two of the hottest tastemakers in the scene right now Chris Stussy and Josh Baker have been playing the record for months, how does it feel to have such heavy support from both acts?

I’m super happy with their interest in the track! Stussy and Baker have both been massive sources of inspiration for me over the past few years. They both do their own thing and don’t compare themselves too much to others. In my opinion, that’s exactly what makes them such great artists. Fun fact, I used to listen to every single one of Josh Baker’s podcasts during Covid. Josh and his guests not only gave me very useful insights into the scene, but also a great amount of motivation to work hard for my passion.

Marco Carola has also been spotted playing the record at Pacha Ibiza’s NYE party, you must have been really excited to see that video come in?

To be honest, I wasn’t even aware that he downloaded the track at that time, so it really came as a surprise, but it is obviously an amazing feeling to see such a legend like Marco playing my music. Some people in the crowd messaged me afterwards, saying that they were absolutely blown away by the track on the Pacha sound system. That’s what matters most!

There was one particular video of you playing the track in Manchester that really kicked things off with the social media hype, talk us through that set and that moment…

That was definitely the most memorable Step By Step moment so far! I played it during my b2b with Kolter at the Loft in Manchester, where we ended up playing all night long. The very first moment I mixed it in, the entire room recognized it and went crazy. Everyone screamed along the lyrics, which was a big surprise for me at that time! I never expected so many people to know it already. It was probably my favourite moment of 2024

The track is proving to be somewhat of a viral success with all the live footage but also the ‘Steak Pasta’ memes with people suggesting that’s what the lyrics sound like.

Haha, I have no idea who first came up with that, but I like it. Some people sent me videos of them literally cooking steak pasta for me, and honestly, it looks super tasty. I’d love to try it some time.

Dutch artists have always had a big say on the global electronic music scene, both the mainstream and underground… but in the last few years we’ve seen the global domination of the likes of ANOTR and Chris Stussy, is that super inspiring for yourself?

It is! Names like that are the living proof for the younger Dutch generation that it is possible to make a living as a DJ. However, don’t be discouraged if you’re a non-Dutch artist. I personally would love to hear more music in the scene from artists with different cultural and musical backgrounds. Keeps it interesting, in my opinion.

You’re still studying right? How’s it been balancing touring, writing music and studying?

That’s right, I’m in my third and final year of my communication science bachelor in Amsterdam. It can be hard sometimes to combine studying and pursuing a music career, especially now that I’m touring almost every weekend. It’s important that I carefully schedule my activities every week and that I keep my priorities straight. Combining university and music forced me to teach myself some ever-lasting productivity skills. I also feel like the knowledge I’ve acquired from my studies so far is applicable in many areas of life. All in all, I definitely don’t regret starting a full bachelor, but I’m also very happy that I can finally drop the extra weight from my shoulders in a few months.

‘Step By Step’ is a huge way to kick off 2025 but what else do you have planned this year… it seems your schedule is super busy?!

As we say in the Netherlands, “a good start is half of the work”. After Step By Step, lots of more good things are coming up though! Obviously, many of those things are not announced yet, but I can already tell you that I’ve got some really cool gigs in the pipeline, like You&Me at Fabric, Fly Warehouse in Edinburgh, Mint Festival, Oranjebloesem, Hide&Seek Festival, and much more. I’ll do my best to surprise you this year!

Are there specific goals you’ve set yourself for 2025… labels you want to release on? Specific parties/clubs you want to play?

Personally, I prefer to just make the music that resonates with me rather than adjusting my sound to match a certain label. This year, I also want to expand my scope a bit. So far, most of my shows have been in the UK, but my goal is to do more shows in different countries as well. I want to open myself up to slightly different music scenes. For me, inspiration comes from the unexplored.
