Eight Emerging Artists On Our Radar: March 2024
Welcome back to On Our Radar, Beatportal’s monthly roundup of the DJs and producers we can’t get enough of.
CARRÉ
Carré set the bar high with her debut EP Tilted on SPE:C last year, but her latest release does not disappoint. Soft Fascination out on March 1st via Fast At Work is a five-track project that glides between breaks, bassline, deep dubstep and club music. Carré explores modern low-end frequencies alongside broken beat percussion, with Priori and James Bangura on remix duties for “Soft Fascination” and “Glowing.” This is the first release on the imprint, which started as a future-minded LA underground party co-founded by Carré, and a community that shaped her passion for bass music. As a result, Carré is fast becoming a global bass sensation, and has already reached some major milestones supporting Special Request, TSVI, Roza Terenzi, D.Tiffany, and Ellen Allien, as well as playing sets at Coachella and CRSSD.
OX7GEN
On 15th March, Mumbai-born DJ/producer OX7GEN released his new EP Evenire on HE.SHE.THEY. The EP is a transcendent six-tracker that includes three original tracks and edits, opening with “Simula Endzone” a glorious fever-dream of swung 4/4 rhythms, pop-esque vocals and a hint of trance. It’s the artist’s first release on the label and marks a new techno/house-influenced direction, having spearheaded India’s D&B movement for many years. OX7GEN is an artist whose sound is continuously evolving, and his current incarnation encompasses left-field house, techno and bass. He’s a master of dance floor moments, and recently performed stand out sets at Magnetic Fields and Echoes of Earth Festival. As an Indian artist he’s passionate about championing his local scene, while challenging global perceptions of the country’s developing electronic community. The tracks on Evenire are some of the first from his new studio space in Goa.
DEER JADE
This month, Swiss-French talent Deer Jade drops Jukurpa, her debut EP on Kompakt. The title track has already made the rounds during her recent sets at Circoloco, Fusion festival, Halcyon SF, Kater Blau, Flash and Pacha, and follows her recognisable production-style of dreamy, otherworldly music that blends genres, cultures and generations. A born traveller, the artist lived in 10 cities before the age of 22, absorbing the different cultures like a sponge and wringing it all out in her music. Her fun-fuelled DJ sets have won her fans all over the world, and her passion and devotion for the music spans everything she does, whether it’s as a producer, performer of participant. She describes her music as “a diverse journey mixing elements from different times and cultures,” and Jukurpa translates to ‘dreamtime’ in the Warlpiri language, and stands for the ancient and ongoing creation of the universe.
BENYAYER
Showing off his knack for crafting mesmerizing beats, renowned London-based producer and DJ Benyayer shares his latest track, “WUH.” It’s the third release from his newly launched label BNYR, and combines UK techno, IDM, and world sounds into one experimental sonic extravaganza. Matt Benyayer is a driving force in today’s underground dance music scene, consistently pushing the boundaries of electronic music under his Dark Sky alias. He blurs genres in his high-energy productions and DJ sets, which have caught the ear of Modeselektor, leading to a long-term collaboration resulting in two studio albums and five EPs. He’s brought his killer live show to coveted venues and festivals like Berghain/Panorama Bar, Concrete, Fabric, Glastonbury, Melt and Mutek. In addition to getting two “WUH” remix treatments from The Maghreban and Wisdom Water this April, be sure to keep an eye out for his next original single, “Push It,” which drops on May 16th.
HELANG
On March 15th, New York-based Helang released her indie-dance inspired techno track “Wise Devil,” the first single from her new EP Lovers of the Unknown, out in mid-May. The track weaves rhythmic percussion with smooth vocals to create a hypnotic soundscape, showcasing the breadth of her burgeoning signature production style. Helang’s DJ sets blend house, techno and ethereal soundscapes, resulting in hypnotic, dynamic grooves and she’s shared the stage with the likes of Testpilot (deadmau5), John Digweed, Camelphat and Eli Brown, and counts Joseph Capriati, Marco Carola and Paco Osuna as fans. Helang’s mission as an artist is to create music that gives voice to her experiences and inspires others, and every track she releases and set she plays demonstrates her integrity, passion, and dedication to the craft.
ATYYA
In February, Canadian dubstep producer ATYYA self-released his latest album The Indivisible, a 10-track low-end journey featuring vocals from Rider Shafique, Finnoh and Rakjay. Real-name Tyy Clark, the artist has been in the dub-game for close to 20 years, mostly self-releasing his music unless he’s working with other stars such as ENiGMA DUBZ or 11th Hour to release on the likes of DUPLOC or Morli. Tyy’s mixes for dub-step label Deep, Dark and Dangerous are essentially works of art, and his remixes of classic hip-hop and trap songs have the ability to tear entire dance floors apart. His production style is so clean it sparkles, which makes sense, seeing as he’s a mastering engineer and an Ableton Instructor. ATYYA’s music is a sensory experience, and his live performances are testament to that.
ZORZA
Zorza, the queen of hyper-techno, has just released her latest EP Hyperdream via Collection Disques Durs. The title track sounds like the Vengaboys on crack, combining 160BPM sledgehammer techno with sped up pop vocals, while the second track, “4eva,” sounds like Scooter on the same substance. The Toronto-born artist has curved out the world’s bounciest niche with these stadium-filling anthems, and won love and endorsements from techno’s biggest stars including Shlømo and Farrago. She’s played at Boiler Room Toronto, Electric Island and Piknic Electronik, and has a whole tour lined up across France and the UK. Her signature sound encompasses hard dance, techno, trance, and hyper-pop, all complemented by her popular Twitch streams, and she says Hyperdream is her take on trance music inspired by the early 2000s.
BEWAV
Tech house extraordinaire Bewav kicked off 2024 with his contagious HAHAHA EP on Hellbent Records, a two-track project full of percussive rhythms, feel-good basslines and eclectic instrumentals. It follows releases on Virgin Music, Encasa Records and blaah! Raw, and helps further his name as one of Brazil’s most exciting new producers. The 29-year-old is passionate about fostering Rio’s underground, which he does through his Clubinho club and label. He’s garnered playouts from big-name artists including Solardo, Tim Baresko, Classmatic and Cloonee, and sites his main inspiration as the percussive, rolling grooves of tech house. With a packed year of gigs lined up, you can catch one of Bewav’s unforgettable sets across Spain, Brazil and Argentina throughout March, April and May.
