What inspired the creation of WATUA?

We Are The Unheard Academy (WATUA) was born out of Eve Horne’s over 20 years lived experience in an industry that wasn’t built for women like her. Growing up in London, Eve faced systemic barriers; background, discrimination, and neurodiversity yet refused to let any of it silence her. She experienced firsthand how women, especially those who were further marginalised, were constantly overlooked in music production. These weren’t just small hurdles; they were brick walls designed to keep women out.

Eve founded WATUA because she knew the fight inside and out. She wasn’t going to stand by and let the next generation face the same rejections and closed doors she had to break through. WATUA is her way of saying, “We belong here,” and giving women the tools, confidence, and community to fight their way into the industry and make their voices heard.

What is the primary mission or goal of WATUA?

WATUA’s mission is clear: to break down the barriers that have kept women and gender expansive creatives out of music production for too long. It’s not about simply offering opportunities but about creating a space where women can thrive, no matter where they come from or what challenges they face. Eve has always known that music production and engineering are seen as male-dominated fields, and the stats prove it. That’s where WATUA steps in, providing free training, mentorship, and ongoing development and support to women of colour, neurodiverse women, gender minorities, mothers and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This is a lifeline for women and gender minorities who’ve faced obstacles at every turn and been told “no” far too many times.

WATUA’s goal is to ensure that they not only learn the skills but also build the resilience to stand tall in an industry that’s often closed its doors to them.

How do you envision the growth and evolution of WATUA in the coming years?

WATUA is growing fast, and the demand is only getting bigger. In its second year alone, the academy has expanded to accommodate three cohorts because so many women and gender minorities applied. That’s a testament to how badly this support is needed and how much hunger there is for change. Year after year, WATUA will continue to reach more women and gender minorities, equipping them with the skills and resilience they need to thrive in the music industry. Eve’s vision is simple: keep growing, keep supporting, and keep making space for those who’ve been left behind for too long. Every new round means more women and gender minorities who are ready to take the industry by storm.

WATUA is here to stay, and its impact will only get louder and stronger as the academy continues to expand, one cohort at a time.
