Introducing: GENIE (Gender Equality Networks in Europe)
Connecting and empowering women and gender diverse music creators in Europe.
GENIE (Gender Equality Networks in Europe), founded in April 2024 is an online database of over 400 projects across 27 countries in Europe supporting gender equity in music.
The database features
projects ranging from producer courses, collectives, radio shows, to festivals and much more. GENIE is a springboard
for collaboration across borders, or finding like-minded people in your own country, all whilst working towards the
common goal of gender equality in music. The website can be filtered by country or project type to help you find your
perfect match.
Founder Grace Goodwin is a champion of gender equality in the music industry. She supports this through academic research into regional gender inequality in music, delivering projects and talks, and launching tools like GENIE (Gender Equality Networks in Europe), a database of projects supporting gender equity in the music industry.
Grace told us ‘This project is about highlighting the amazing work across Europe that is supporting women who want to take up space in the music industry. GENIE would not have been possible without the people who took the time to talk to me. I was amazed at the variety and number of projects I have found and can't wait to see the collaborations that take place because of GENIE.’
GENIE was launched after Grace travelled to major festivals around Europe where she realised that project leaders and gender equality activists were not aware of each other's work. She started collating information on projects she encountered across Europe, reaching out to stakeholders who connected her with project leaders and communities. Just a year later she had collected a list of over 300 projects, which encouraged Soundcloud to enlist as the lead supporter of GENIE.
Since launch, GENIE has added over 100 projects which is no doubt due to the community it has fostered. The website allows people to upload their own project for inclusion. Grace has presented GENIE at festivals and conferences such as Eurosonic, Tallinn Music Week and Linecheck. With her background in academia, Grace carries out research relating to gender equity in music, using the behind the scenes data at GENIE.
