Hear Four Tet Use Ellie Goulding’s Voice Memos on New Single, "In My Dreams"
The chanteuse lends her gossamer vocals to Four Tet’s first one-off since May’s 'Three +.'
Serial collaborators Four Tet and Ellie Goulding are again aligning their names, this time in the credits for “In My Dreams.” The English producer plays with texture on the aqueous single, juxtaposing a staticky rhythmic loop and bumping bass with the lulls of bells and chimes that recall the songstress’ 2011 single. Goulding’s vocals are so light that they seem almost to float on the number — Four Tet’s first single since he released the deluxe version of his 12th studio album, Three, in May. Listen below.
“At the end of last year Ellie texted me with a couple of voice notes for a song idea. Words and melodies she was singing into her phone and she asked me if I could use them to make something. She’s told me in the past she likes to send me vocals that I can just use as sound and turn into whatever I want (which is how the track ‘Baby’ happened a few years ago),” Four Tet said. “I found other sounds to go with it and made ‘In My Dreams.’ She added some new vocal parts but we ended up keeping the voice note recordings as the main vocal. I guess the first take is often the most magical.”
“Baby,” from Four Tet’s 2020 album, Sixteen Oceans, marked the creatives’ first collaboration. Last year, his remix of Goulding’s “Easy Lover” featuring Big Sean was nominated for Best Remixed Recording at the 65th annual GRAMMY Awards.
