Teardrops Reborn: A Classic Track Revived for Today's Dance Floors
Sammy Porter, George Mensah, and Hayley May sit down with Beatportal to discuss their modern reimagining of the iconic "Teardrops," blending nostalgia with fresh house vibes.

Sammy Porter, George Mensah, and Hayley May have teamed up to deliver a fresh spin on a
classic with their new track Teardrops, released via 3beat. This reimagination combines
nostalgia with modern house music, blending the old and new. George, Sammy and Hayley sat
down with Beatportal to talk all about it.
The original "Teardrops" by Womack & Womack holds a special place for George, as his parents loved playing it around the house when he was growing up. It reminds him of those Sundays spent going to church with his family. When it was given a garage refix years later,he fell in love with it once again, those feelings inspired him to create his own version
George shared, “I knew this track inside out, and it made sense to bring it into a modern house vibe.” He teamed up with Sammy to bring that vision to life, and both felt Hayley’s soulful voice was the perfect match. Hayley expressed her excitement: “It was a pleasure to sing this track. I’ve loved it for years, and it felt so natural to perform it.”
George and Sammy road-tested several versions during their Ibiza Rocks residency, gauging reactions from both younger and older audiences. Their goal was to create something that could resonate across generations.
Sammy said, “Seeing how it connected with people of all ages was incredible. That’s when we
knew we had something special.” A key moment in the studio was when Hayley adjusted the
vocal key, a decision that brought everything together. “When we dropped the key and made it
more soulful, it just felt right,” Sammy recalled. “That was the magic moment.”

Reworking such a beloved song brought a unique set of challenges. Hayley admitted there was pressure to do the track justice, but she embraced the opportunity to make it her own. “It’s always nerve-wracking putting out a record with such a legacy, but I added my own twist,” she said.
Sammy and George also felt the weight of expectation, particularly in a fast-paced music landscape where trends change quickly. “Music today feels like fast food,” George explained. “A song comes out, and it’s forgotten by the next week. But with a nostalgic track like Teardrops, it has staying power.”
A key factor in Teardrops' success is its ability to tap into that nostalgia. As George pointed out, bringing back classic tracks offers listeners something timeless in an era where new music can feel fleeting. “Nostalgic music lasts. It’s familiar and connects on a deeper level,” he said.
One of the strengths of the production process was the ability to test the track live. Sammy and George played Teardrops at gigs like Sundown Festival and Ibiza Rocks, and the reaction from the crowd confirmed that the track was a hit. Sammy emphasized how important live testing is: “Playing the track live throughout the summer, we could see in real time how it was received. The energy was insane.”

With the success of "Teardrops," it’s no surprise that the trio plans to work together again. While they had tried to collaborate before, there was always something holding them back—whether it was the pressures of social media or hesitation from other labels. Now that they’ve figured out what works, Sammy hinted that more collaborations are definitely on the table.
The trio touched on the growing importance of social media, particularly TikTok, in promoting music. The pressure to make Teardrops stand out on platforms where attention spans are short is tough. Sammy remarked, “The work doesn’t stop when the record is released. We’re constantly thinking about how to make it catch on, especially on platforms like TikTok.”
Teardrops is more than just a nostalgic throwback; it’s a modern anthem that bridges the gap between past and present, and lights up dancefloors globally.
