Mike Paradinas Releases 'Grush': A Return to the Dance-Driven Roots of IDM
Veteran Producer and Planet Mu Label Owner Delivers an Energetic and Nostalgic Album Inspired by Early IDM Influences
Mike Paradinas, the legendary producer and founder of Planet Mu, unveils his latest album, Grush, an electrifying collection that reclaims the "dance" essence of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). This new record takes a back-to-basics approach, inspired by the original artists who shaped IDM—a genre known for its melodic, introspective, and non-urban roots.
Grush is a carefully crafted album, with each track refined and road-tested through live performances. Collaborating closely with his touring partner and visual artist Mora (Jan Moravec), Paradinas has created a seamless, high-energy experience that mirrors the dynamic flow of a live gig. Many tracks were conceived in hotel rooms as immediate responses to live shows, such as "Imperial Crescent," named after a Japanese hotel, and "Belvedere," inspired by Prague. Tracks like "Hyper Daddy" were specifically composed for live performance, highlighting the album's deep connection to the stage.
The album’s sound is a testament to Paradinas’ rich musical history. It features prominent, confident drum patterns intertwined with sweetly nostalgic melodies, creating a captivating contrast between softness and tension. "Hyper Daddy" exemplifies this with its spiraling notes and twinkling piano, evoking early influences like Black Dog and Omni Trio, all while racing alongside splashy jungle drums. The title track offers aquatic acid footwork, with drums bubbling and kicking softly. Paradinas also revisits his Tusken Raiders alias in tracks like "Windsor Safari Park," which transitions from moody electro to a bright, hardcore vibe.
Grush is structured with interludes like "Reticulum A, B, and C," placed at the beginning, middle, and end of the album, subtly suggesting a thematic continuity. The result is a cohesive and joyful listening experience. Whether for personal listening or DJ sets, Grush captures the essence of where Mike Paradinas' musical journey stands in 2024—both a reflection on his past and a leap into the future of IDM.
