Lessons In Persistence: Drumcode Signing SUDO Share Career Advice from 25 Years in the Music Industry
Japanese electronic duo SUDO celebrates the success of their chart-topping Drumcode EP and imparts five essential lessons from their illustrious and lengthy career in music.
It was a huge glory and honour to release our EP Real World on Drumcode. We never expected it to go to Beatport Number 1 on the techno charts, so as you can imagine, the last couple of months have been an incredible thrill. It’s been a long journey to get to this point and we’re hugely grateful for the support Adam Beyer, Bart Skils, all the Drumcode team and the label’s loyal supporters have given our music. Reflecting back on our decades working in music, here are our biggest learnings and ones we’d like to share with any emerging music producers still finding their way in the industry.
1. Dance as much as you can on the dancefloor
You can have many pseudo experiences on social media nowadays, but I believe that the best input is on the dance floor. I would recommend giving your body and soul a lot of great experiences there.
2. Find your strengths and use them
What are you good at, what do you like? Melody, rhythm, writing the lyrics, socialising, DJing, dancing, perseverance, entertaining people at parties? Explore what you are good at. It can be your own originality, and it can give you confidence.
3. Entertain yourself with music
First of all, make sounds that move you, even if they are low quality at first. There are a lot of very convenient environments in the world today where you can improve your music/DJing, but if your music doesn't move you, it will be difficult to convey that enthusiasm to others.
4. Maintain a physical and mental balance
Artist activity needs a lots of energy, and if you are mentally healthy, you can enjoy creating. It helps to take walks, play sports, relax with family, hang out with friends and sometimes deliberately spend time on non-music inputs. Later on, if you send to a demo and it doesn't work well, don't get depressed. Always ask for feedback if possible. But also recognise that everyone has their own preferences and never take things personally.
5. Actions are very meaningful; there is no need to be timid
Actions always have consequences. You will experience what you consider to be a failure. But that is your own truth and the experience that will lead you to success. If you have a dream or goal, I would recommend that you should take action towards it.
