The Collective Bae Is (R)Evolutionizing The Music Industry
A New Paradigm Of Meaningful Music
The Collective BAE was formed in 2016 in Brooklyn, New York by the electronic music DJ, producer, and educator DRĖĖĖMY. Initially a yoga and meditation teacher who had worked in sound and social justice as a podcast producer at National Public Radio, she founded the collective as a (r)evolutionary space to fuse music, well-being, and impact. Primarily uplifting, featuring, and connecting female-identifying and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists across multiple disciplines and genres, BAE stands for “Balancing All Energies, Before Anything Else” and is a pioneering force in both the New York and global movements towards more equitable, regenerative, and transformational dancefloors.
The Collective BAE now functions most directly as a worldwide holistic impact agency; booking, curating, and showcasing intentional artists who are oriented towards positive change. Besides being featured on Forbes and several other notable online publications for their celebrated work in fusing art and wellness, BAE continues to push the boundaries on what nightlife experiences can be — integrating cultural work, ceremonial experiences, therapeutic sound, and other immersive art activations inspired by and infused with the musical talent that BAE produces and curates.
The core values that drive the Collective BAE range from diversity to regenerative creativity (partnering with impactful service organizations that benefit youth, women, and the planet) to empowerment (educating new generations of DJs and music producers) to liberation (creating safer spaces for freedom of expression and embodiment) to solidarity in New York and beyond (aligning with other communities and movements that center the alleviation of inequity and harm).
The electronic music community in New York City is largely diverse and multi-genre but has always been, for the most part, segregated in terms of genre and representation. Since the inception of the Collective BAE, the regional scene has been gradually transformed and evolved by the infusion of intentional well-being experiences and activations. Because of the consistent curatorial and social justice impact BAE has had on the local culture towards both conscious nightlife and diverse lineups (in sound and in gender representation), it has grown more and more common to experience this kind of unique electronic music experience. "Conscious dancefloors" that offer guidelines on consent, along with non-alcoholic drinking options and alternative spaces to connect and experience the music have become a new paradigm in the sene. Because New York City is such a central and impactful node for the worldwide electronic music industry, this kind of impact can be seen and felt as it ripples across multiple key cities around the planet. Though, New York City still has a long way to go to create safer and more regenerative nightlife experiences for all.
The impact the Collective BAE has had on the electronic music scene is undeniable. While it still remains fairly underground in the mainstream industry, BAE has tangibly influenced the movement towards more dialogue, reflection, and action around representation, impact, service, safety, and experiential design.
BAE is now most invested in rooting its systems as an agency that represents artists on larger stages, and is most recently nourishing its electronic music arm: BAE SOUND, which features remarkable global producer talent from countries like Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and beyond. We envision the evolution and growth of the collective manifesting as widespread industry support and alignment, with more resources being dedicating to artist development, talent features, and impactful partnerships that can bring BAE’s unique flavor of community and feminine-powered experience to larger and more diverse dancefloors.
