Masters at Work and Harvey Sutherland Remix New Surprise Chef EP
The Melbourne-based soul and funk band get a house music makeover from Harvey Sutherland and Masters at Work.
Australia’s cinematic soul specialists Surprise Chef have linked up with machine funk expert Harvey Sutherland and hugely influential duo Masters at Work for a new remix package.
Hailing from Melbourne, the four-piece instrumental group Surprise Chef has bewitched various underground circles worldwide with laidback ’70s jazz-funk grooves, swinging rhythms, and distinctive synth work that is ripe for interpretation.
Out now via Mr. Bongo, Surprise Chef’s five-track Masters at Work & Harvey Sutherland (Remixes) EP shows us just how malleable the band’s airtight compositions really are. MAW kicks things off under their Nuyorican Soul moniker, injecting the track with a Latin and Afro flavor over a stout broken beat rhythm. The duo also offers a 4×4 MAW Remix, before reeling things back with their MAW Dub of “Crayfish Caper.”
On the b-side, fellow Melbourne native Harvey Sutherland reworks “New Ferrari.” Armed with cosmic synths, sweltering basslines, and sweeping pads, it’s a dub-disco workout that packs a serious punch.
