Let the Summer of “Drinkee” commence!
Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern of beloved US dance music duo SOFI TUKKER have just dropped two of their most noteworthy remix releases to date.
the pair has tapped three of Beatport’s top-selling artists — Carl Cox, Vintage Culture, and John Summit — to remix their widely-celebrated 2016 single “Drinkee” — out now via Ultra. Listen to the remixes below.
We caught up with SOFI TUKKER to discuss how their year has been going, how they got all three artists on board for the remixes, and the safari livestream they’ve set up to help celebrate the release. Check out the interview below.
Thanks for joining us! How has the Summer of 2021 been treating you thus far?
It’s been incredible! We definitely don’t take being out and about for granted anymore! It feels like we stored up energy for 16 months, and now we are getting to share it.
You first released “Drinkee” in 2016. What made you decide to revisit the tune for a new remix package?
This has always been a special track to us and one of our favorites. We still hear people play it out, but it needed a bit more club energy to really play it at peak hour.
How did you get Carl Cox as well as John Summit & Vintage culture involved?
With Carl Cox, we just reached out! We are huge fans of him. Our whole industry would be different without him. He embodies the pure love of the music and the craft in a way that we’ve always been inspired by. So getting a remix from him really was a dream come true.
With John Summit and Vintage Culture, they reached out to us! It was a coincidence that we had just gotten the Carl Cox one! Vintage Culture actually made one of the first-ever remixes for it in 2016 but he wanted to play it out now, so he and John worked on this version.
Tell us about the livestream that you are doing on July 23rd to promote the Drinkee remixes?
We are going to be live streaming from the Lion Country Safari, surrounded by Giraffes and Zebras and Hippos… animals have always been inspirational to us, so being able to DJ there is a dream. We will be DJing from the back of Keekee, Tucker’s truck. Lion Country Safari is also really cool because of its conservation efforts for threatened species. This is gonna be fun!
