Who knew that house and tech-house would have such a hold on our hearts and our CD-Js again this year? One long or indeed short glance at the stats for 2022 and the same story pops up again and again: nothing beats a stone-cold classic house track and nothing beats a timely reminder of the fact via a new remix for the modern dancefloor. Twenty-five years ago, Todd Terry was the man with the midas touch: ten years ago, it was a six-minute club mix from Dennis Ferrer or Tensnake, and in 2022 it’s the turn of Purple Disco Machine, a two-legged German disco groove machine who took on everything from ‘Coma Cat’ to Cerrone and MVC Project: it’s no accident that in ‘22, he is Beatport’s number one Best-Selling Artist, one place above John Summit and two places above Vintage Culture, another producer who, tellingly, had a vintage year via Beatport and indeed on the ‘floor. (James Hype and David Guetta completed the Top 5).

Aside from raw sales, there’s also streaming to consider. It’s no surprise that UK house imprint Defected Records ruled the roots on the streaming front – they had another fantastic year with key releases from Claptone and Jamie Jones to Harry Romero and Inaya Day, but in truth, the mighty SPINNIN are not far behind. Intriguingly, the heavy resurgence of drum ‘n’ bass is there for all to see at number three: it’s Andy C’s RAM imprint who are in third place, with Afterlife and Distrokid making up the Top 5. Further down the ten, you’ll find Toolroom, Drumcode, and Musical Freedom: melodic, tech-house and techno all the way, it seems.

But we saved the most fun analysis to last: after all, who doesn’t reminisce about the year gone by as we head towards Christmas? The biggest-selling single of 2022 was again a remix, this time by FISHER, who took on Bob Sinclar’s World Hold On and gave it a nice new lick of paint: shouts to Yellow Productions on the label front. At two, it’s James Hype’s new “Ferrari” on The Cross and at 3, arguably the biggest dance record of the year in overall terms, LF System’s “Afraid To Feel.” John Summit’s “La Danza” is at 4 with his Defected smash and the remainder of the top 10 continues the tech-house theme with tracks from Joel Corry and remixes from MEDUZA. But what it also shows you — as does the streaming Top 10 — is just how darn big dance music is beyond the club. Claptone’s remix of “Cold Heart” by Elton and Dua Lipa was a huge streaming success on Beatport as well as everywhere else: it seems that no disco big or small can resist a killer hook, a deft dance floor arrangement or a kick drum to accompany your third drink of the day.
