EGGSTA & That Girl: “We Want to Take You on a Journey of Sounds You Didn’t Know You Needed”
From one studio session to a brand-new duo, EGGSTA & That Girl talk about finding a shared sound, trying new ideas, and having fun with music again.

It was supposed to be a collaboration. Then EGGSTA and That Girl got into the studio, started talking about music and their goals, and quickly realized they had found something neither of them was looking for alone: a creative partnership that just clicked. They describe it as “studio chemistry” — the kind where one person can throw out a strange melody or sound, the other immediately understands it, and suddenly a track starts taking shape.
That freedom can already be heard in their first release, “Traces Of You,” which grew from a story about trying to erase the memories of a bad breakup. But this is only the beginning. Together, they’re opening the door to darker, more progressive sounds, faster tempos, and ideas that might not fit their individual projects.
We caught up with EGGSTA and That Girl to hear how it all started, what makes their studio work, and what they have in store for the new project.
Q: With both of you already having your own careers and identities, when did you first realize there could be something special about working together?
That Girl: I was already a fan of Eden’s music before I realised she was South African too, which was an added bonus! I’ve always wanted to work closely with another artist, co-write and produce, but that takes a certain kind of chemistry (what I call studio chemistry). When you’re used to creating alone, opening up that process can be incredibly personal. So, while collaborating made sense, especially since we’re both in the same industry and now in the same genre, it wasn’t a done deal until we actually got into the studio. And when we did? It just clicked. We quickly realised we had something special, and that this could be bigger than a collaboration. We’re not just joining forces on a few tracks; we’re building something entirely new together. And honestly, that’s pretty exciting!
Q: Coming from strong songwriting backgrounds but taking quite different paths through electronic music, what do you think you bring to each other?
EGGSTA: She has this amazing ability to simplify my ridiculously overcomplicated brain, which I’m very grateful for! But beyond that, Tanya has such a unique creative instinct. She comes up with these unexpected melodies and weird, wonderful sounds that I probably wouldn’t think of on my own. She definitely pushes me creatively, and I think that’s a big part of what makes our studio chemistry so special.
That Girl: I was blown away by just how ridiculously talented Eden is in all the different aspects of being an artist; being able to write, sing, play numerous instruments and produce herself fully. That's so unheard of these days so I gained so much respect for her in that sense. She helps me broaden my ideas and not limit myself to what I believe I’m just capable of and I always thank her for making me “just be” in music and fall in love with the music process again without it feelinglike a job. The best part is that it naturally just inspires us both to flow with whatever we feel rather than be restricted to what we think people want or expect of us as our artist personas. She makes music feel fun again and not so serious.
Q: Since you each have your own sound, was it easy to find a sound that felt right for both of you?
EGGSTA: It actually was and we keep finding little gems that are becoming quite distinct and almost signature to what we are wanting to release under our duo as EGGSTA & That Girl.
That Girl: I think we both have very similar taste in music (outside of the trance genre), which made it easy to identify what it is we like in terms of sound design and of course, with Eden being able to produce professionally, it’s so nice to be working with someone who can write the sounds that I can only explain in “music language,” and she just understands completely.
Q: Was there a moment when you first started working together and thought, “Okay, we should definitely keep doing this”?
That Girl: It was initially just going to be a collab, but after our studio session together and just realising how much we have in common in terms of what we wanted to achieve in the music scene and how much we inspire each other creatively, it was evident that it was not going to be just a once-off collab and that a duo would make sense. We both wanted to explore new avenues of where we could improve as artists and to shape each other to be the best artist versions of ourselves.
EGGSTA: Tanya loved one of my releases, “Bet My Life On You,” so I wanted to make something similar that we couldrelease together. After working on that together in the studio and talking for hours about music and our goals, it was inevitable that a duo just had to happen :)
Q: Let’s talk about “Traces Of You.” What was the idea behind the song, and how did it all come together?
EGGSTA: I originally had this idea of pictures and images being erased once someone has left your life after a badbreakup or bad experience. And so I had ‘erase the traces of you’ as the main hook idea that I really wanted to carry through the song. I also wanted to use oxymorons to describe how love can go from something so warm to feeling like a stone. And the verse was built and based on that.
That Girl: After both having gone through similar situations in past relationships, it made it so easy to connect to this idea and that inspired the theme of the lyrics and song tone.
Q: What was the trickiest part of turning the first idea into the finished track?
EGGSTA: I must say, it felt really effortless. I think the only tricky part I had was getting those bass wobbles right in the final bounces at the end haha..
That Girl: It’s a phenomenon where if you just click, it works and nothing really feels tricky, to be fair. We both want to hear more of each other in the tracks that we make and so sometimes we will find it “tricky” to get that balance right notto overdo and tone down all the elements that we are inspired to put in, as sometimes simpler is better, of course, lol.
Q: You’re also releasing an acoustic version. Why did you want to give the song a different feel like that?
EGGSTA & That Girl: We love creating an acoustic version because it really gives the lyrics and the piano space to breathe and for listeners to resonate with the true meaning of the song. We also want to include a bit of versatility in our releases this way.
Q: When you disagree about something in the studio, who usually wins?
That Girl: She wants to put the shine on me more and I want to put the shine on her more so sometimes that is a bit of a challenge to come to a compromise and balance. We are just so proud of each other.
EGGSTA: Again, this has been pretty effortless and we both ultimately want what’s best for the song, so when we share our opinions, I’d say both of us have been super open to hearing what the other thinks and trusting that it’ll add value, and even if we try it and it doesn’t work out, it’s always worth giving it a chance. And agree, we’re super proud of each other!
Q: Is there a side of your music that you feel more comfortable exploring together than you would on your own?
That Girl: Yes, even though I’m best known for my angelic, uplifting sounds, I do love the darker melancholy, techno and progressive/alternative sounds, which we can do now as our duo and that is something we both wanted to explore more, even though we are known for our individual sounds as our solo artist profiles.
EGGSTA: I’ve started producing some tracks that are a lot “harder” and in about the 140bpm range, which is very unusual for me but I gotta say I’m loving it. And this duo gives me the space to really be creative with some new genres and sound design.
Q: Without talking about genres, how would you describe what you want people to feel when they hear EGGSTA & That Girl?
EGGSTA: Love this question. I’d like to think our music brings out emotion in our listeners, that it can create memories in time and that when they experience one of our live sets, we take them on a journey of genres and sounds that they didn’t even know they needed to hear.
That Girl: What she said!
