Cercle Cancels Mexico Festival, Citing Financial Difficulties

Cercle has canceled its upcoming Mexico festival after founder Derek Barbolla said the company is facing serious financial trouble.

Founded in France 10 years ago, Cercle built its name by filming electronic artists in striking locations around the world, from ancient sites and mountaintops to major landmarks. Its videos have become a fixture of online dance music culture, pairing large-scale performances with cinematic backdrops and free YouTube premieres.

In a statement posted to Instagram, Barbolla said the event “can no longer be delivered under the conditions it was designed and planned for.” Anyone who bought a ticket will be refunded automatically within 24 to 48 hours.

The news comes after what Barbolla described as a long, difficult stretch for Cercle. Post COVID difficulties where costs went up, taxes went up, and margins got thinner. After years of putting money, time, and risk behind large-scale productions around the world, the company says the numbers no longer hold.

Barbolla said fans have asked for years how they could support Cercle directly. Now, he said, the company needs that help.
