Boards of Canada Inferno album out now

Boards of Canada have released Inferno, their long-awaited fifth studio album and first new full-length in 13 years.

Out now on Warp Records, Inferno marks the return of Scottish electronic music duo Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin, whose last album, Tomorrow’s Harvest, arrived in 2013.

Boards of Canada did not simply announce Inferno. They let the mystery build first. The rollout began in early April, when mysterious VHS tapes started landing at fans’ homes and quickly sparked heavy speculation across Reddit, forums and social media. Days later, cryptic Boards of Canada posters appeared in London, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo, sending fans into another round of theories over whether the campaign was real.

Warp acknowledged the posters on April 14, before Boards of Canada shared a new social clip on April 16, confirming the activity came directly from the band. Platform icons changed soon after, and on May 7, the duo released the album’s lead single, “Prophecy At 1420 MHz.” On May 22, exclusive Inferno listening sessions took place in Tokyo, Berlin, Barcelona, London, Glasgow, New York and Los Angeles.

Now, Inferno is finally here: 18 new tracks of bleak, dark, post-apocalyptic atmosphere, warped nostalgia and eerie melodic pull from one of electronic music’s most mythologized acts. Listen below.

Boards of Canada's new album Inferno is out now via Warp Records.
