As rising London-based duo josh & sam make their Anjunadeep Explorations debut with ‘maybe yeah / rondo defence’, the twin brothers who have worked behind the scenes for over a decade as producers and composers reflect on their inspirations, journey so far and the shaping behind their latest release.

United by a shared love of film scores and textural electronic music and both classically trained on piano, Josh later gravitated toward synthesis after discovering deadmau5 and The Prodigy, while Samuel was drawn to cinematic composition through Ólafur Arnalds. Now writing with influences like Kiasmos, Bonobo, and George FitzGerald, their work blends emotive scoring with forward-thinking electronic sound design.

Finishing these two songs has felt like two quite different journeys over several years. ‘Maybe Yeah’ had changed form several times over several years, where it felt like it had infinite version before we settled on something that fully sat right with us. ‘Rondo Defence’ was a similarly old demo from around 2020 but had sat pretty much untouched for that duration despite always making it into the end of folders and lists of songs that we felt strongly about.

Drawing on the distinct London textures woven throughout detailed and emotive production style, Maybe yeah’s reese basslines, UKG-inspired synths and foley highly reminiscent of Burials production style. In contrast, rondo defence leans into Josh and Sam's wildly creative and more experimental side, built from resampling plant DNA through granular synthesisers to create the track's foundation.

The constant reshaping of ‘Maybe Yeah’ meant that the project file, synths and effect chains stayed up to date with our processes despite being started in 2018. In contrast, ‘Rondo Defence’ felt like unearthing an old relic of the past, where we were trying to figure out what we were doing years ago, fixing mixing errors while still trying to retain the colour and magic of the original demo. We made sure to focus around the core of the track, which for us was the relationship between the chord stab, made from a granular sample of plant DNA, UKG inspired bass and knock-y drum pattern

The release has been a fun exercise in not just looking into how we want to make things now, but also trying to stay true to how we’ve been writing and what makes us excited over the last few years. And we’re super excited to expand on that ethos, fleshing out the sonic world with future releases with Explorations!
