Welcome back to On Our Radar, Beatportal’s monthly roundup of the DJs and producers we can’t get enough of.
Check out the On Our Radar Beatport Chart to find tracks from the artists below, along with additional tunes that have caught our attention this month.
BAALTI
San Francisco duo Baalti are about to release their most personal project to date with their Better Together EP — landing on June 28th via Seb Wildblood’s All My Thoughts imprint. The EP utilizes their signature sampling skills over five tracks, filled with nods to their South Asian heritage with Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi music fused with breaks, bass and club-ready drops. The EP follows a slew of successful releases on All My Thoughts and Krunk Kulture, as well as some high-energy live sets alongside Peach, Darwin, Farsight and many others. “[Better Together] is our most sincere and complete expression yet, and we’ve tried to capture all of the feelings we had from a year of touring, living with our bffs, being in love, finding amazing communities through music, and getting more connected with each other as a duo,” Baalti says.
INTROSPEKT
Somehow, in between touring the width and breadth of the US and playing alongside Eris Drew, Angel D’Lite and Bored Lord, Introspekt found the time to write a new EP. Temptation is the artist’s second EP of 2023, following Forlorn which cemented her name as California’s best UK Garage producer. Her productions are so contagious that Octo Octa and Eris Drew only needed to listen to Temptation once before deciding to sign it to their T4T LUV NRG label. Introspekt’s music takes inspiration from classic house and ballroom culture, but she does much more than just pay tribute to these communities. Her music actively progresses the culture, adding new depth, texture and flavour to the genres and communities she calls home.
BIIANCO
In May, multi-faceted non-binary artist BIIANCO released their hard-hitting and acidic single “I Like To Listen To Music When I’m Sad” on Venice Records. The break-heavy, rave-ready track is the latest string to the bow of the DJ, producer and singer/songwriter, following “Get Right” feat. Dread MC and “Money Power Freedom” with Ugly Cry and Maiah Manser. This summer the artist will showcase their many talents at shows in LA, Detroit, London and Glasgow, and at major festivals, including Secret Garden Party and Glastonbury Festival. BIIANCO’s blending and selecting skills are on full display in their recent micro-mix for Jaguar’s BBC Introducing show, and their Instagram is packed full of production, hardware and recording inspiration, as well as compelling visual art to run alongside their releases.
RAKANS
Nazareth-born, Dresden-based RAKANS is on a mission to move the masses. On June 22nd, he’ll self-released his Emergence EP, showcasing his immersive, full-power techno-producing abilities, and his DJ sets are just as transportive. RAKANS is the founder of Rawmantique, an event series that showcases queer talent and performance, and he’s a resident of Berlin’s Pornceptual, one of the city’s most wild and forward-thinking club concepts. With regular appearances in Hör Berlin, Heads Radio and Mixmag, RAKANS is an integral part of Germany’s queer community, and founded non-profit RAWM e.V to help overcome discrimination and trauma due to origin, sexual orientation, gender and social status through art, cultural events and education. RAKANS works tirelessly to create spaces for his community, which simultaneously builds a more open-minded and progressive society.
SUPREEMS
Ever since the 2016 track “Us Together” catapulted Supreems onto the global stage, he’s been unstoppable. He’s toured the world, released music on some of the biggest labels in dance music and garnered support from Four Tet, Bicep, Ross From Friends and hundreds more. Now he’s continuing that trajectory with the release of his first full-length project, NACHTSCHONE on his new label Sweet Sun. The record combines high-tempo breakbeats with emotive rhythms, and leaves no sonic stone unturned, taking the listener on a journey through melancholic rhythms, club-ready bangers, techno, trance, jungle and everything in between. It’s a demonstration of the Antwerp-based artist’s ability to transcend genres and explore new sonic territory, and a triumph for one of dance music’s most respected new names.
JSPORT
Atlanta-based DJ and producer JSPORT takes inspiration from the African diaspora to create swinging, drum-heavy beats often described as “drum poems.” Their Out of Bounds EP on Morph Tracks is all about percussion, with melody and harmony acting as support so the beats can bathe in the spotlight. With “Zenon,” the artist combines sparse rhythms with infectious house, while “Gully Bop” is a soca-infused dark bass track. As well as their epic selector and production skills, JSPORT is also the founder of Club Morph, a “Black-owned creative agency crafting experience and sound.” Their debut set with Boiler Room in April showed the dance music world just what this crew can do – and JSPORT is front-centre of the revolution.
