In this case, it’s as simple as staying true to his production ethos, which has long embraced gradual builds and slow-burning sonic arcs. Authenticity and individuality in an era of abounding trends feel both refreshing and contrarian – two features that undoubtedly helped “Science” connect with deadmau5’s audience well before its eventual release. 

Before it formally arrived as another big dance/electronic tune featuring Stevie Appleton's increasingly ubiquitous vocals, “Science” surfaced in the producer’s sets for months, picking up a following (and some Reddit lore) along the way.
