Ministry of Sound is getting a makeover just in time for what, according to a press release, will be its “most transformative year yet.” In addition to hosting special programming celebrating its 35th anniversary throughout the year, the iconic venue is undergoing intensive renovations to its main room, The Box, ahead of a set of reopening shows slated for January 30 – 31, with performances from &friends, Lauren Lo Sung, Pete Tong b2b Kölsch, and more.
Upgrades include a new sound system – The Box will retire its Martin Audio system for a custom KV2 positioned alongside VHD subwoofers – a “state-of-the-art” overhead light installation, and new video lighting courtesy of Lucid Creates, a UK design and fabrication studio known for its past stage and installation work with Glastonbury and Boomtown, per Time Out London. The Box's DJ booth will also be reconfigured. As part of the new plans, the booth will be lowered into the crowd to support greater dynamism with stage formats like 360-degree DJ sets. The new setup includes an elevated backstage area that can accommodate up to 200 people.
“The redesign will fully transform the room into a future-facing club space while preserving its industrial spirit,” says the club’s director, Matt Long. “The Box has always set benchmarks, particularly around sound, and this renovation allows us to reset that standard for the next generation to continue evolving the space without losing its identity.”
Although The Box remains closed until the end of January, Ministry of Sound’s anniversary celebrations are already in full swing, having kicked off Jan. 9 with Carnival of Sound. In the months to come, the London venue will welcome an array of artists through its doors, including Ron Trent, Eats Everything, and Tony Humphries, among many others.
