From Bira’s Bass to David Baíya’s Beat: ‘Father’ Connects Legacy and House Music

Brazilian DJ and producer David Baíya releases ‘Father’, a deeply personal track built from one of the final studio sessions with his father Bira, the legendary bassist from Jô Soares’ renowned sextet. Recorded in 2019 alongside longtime collaborator Darick Gyorgy, the session captured Bira’s unmistakable basslines, which now form the heart of a production that connects heritage, groove, and emotion.
After years kept in the vault, ‘Father’ returns in 2025 with a new interpretation by Rodrigo Ferrari, who brings the track to the dancefloor while preserving its original soul. The result is a meeting point between organic instrumentation and modern house elements, enriched by the textured vocals of American artist Chad Gerber.
“Recording with my dad felt natural at the time. I only understood its meaning later,” says Baíya.
‘Father’ is a reminder that music never really ends — it transforms, evolves, and finds new ways to stay alive. What began as a spontaneous jam between a father and son has become a timeless dialogue between generations, resonating in every layer of sound.
“The bass is his. The beat is mine. The groove is ours.”
