South London dubstep pioneer Mala is back – and he’s doing it in proper heavyweight style. Teaming up with Nigerian artist Magugu, the pair unleash “Militant Don” on the legendary DEEP MEDi MUSIK, marking Mala’s first original release in over three years.
The track has been doing damage as a mystery dub all summer, popping up in sets from Four Tet, Skream, Sir Spyro, and Mala himself. Now, the secret weapon is finally official – a raw and righteous anthem that captures the bass pressure and uncompromising integrity that the DEEP MEDi community stands for. Listen below.
Built on a tightly coiled snare roll and Magugu’s commanding English-Nigerian Pidgin verses, “Militant Don” evokes the spirit of Anti War Dub–era DMZ while pushing forward with renewed fire. It’s both a nod to dubstep’s origins and a statement of intent from one of its architects.
For DEEP MEDi – the label that has defined underground bass music since 2006 – this is another high point in its storied legacy. For fans of Mala, it’s a long-awaited return to form, reminding the world that dubstep still hits hardest when it comes from the source.
