When Wolf Music Recordings launched in 2009, house was splintering into countless directions. Digital platforms were rewriting the rules, trends were rising and falling in the space of months, and the London underground was caught between reverence for the past and the rush of the new. For Matt Neale and Stu Clark, the answer wasn’t to chase the noise but to carve out a space that honoured what they call “the real HOUSE culture.” Sixteen years later, that philosophy has kept WOLF steady as one of the UK’s most trusted sources of deep, soulful grooves.

The label has grown into more than just a catalog of records. It’s also a DJ duo, a merch brand and the occasional party, all bound by the same principle: supporting the music and people they believe in. “We’ve always tried to support the creative endeavours we believe in and give back to the scene we love,” Neale and Clark explain. That commitment has attracted names like Theo Parrish, Kerri Chandler, Kai Alce, Medlar, Bicep, Session Victim and Frits Wentink, as well as emerging voices such as Retromigration and Lea Lisa.

Asked to choose three defining cuts, the founders point to Wentink’s “I Want You,” Medlar’s “Terrell” and Lea Lisa’s “Something For The Dancers,” remixed by Kerri Chandler. Each track represents a different strand of the label’s DNA, from dusty Dutch house to London-rooted experiments and full-circle moments with legendary figures. “Lea Lisa’s been part of the scene since the late ’90s and seeing her record remixed by Kerri felt like a full-circle moment,” says Neale.

The story is still unfolding. This autumn brings a new EP from Retromigration, alongside a Wentink remix project featuring house stalwarts Ian Pooley and Glenn Underground. Releases from Reagan Grey and Abacus are also in the pipeline, expanding a catalog that already reads like a history lesson in underground house.

WOLF’s longevity comes down to an approach that’s both simple and uncompromising. They’ve never tried to be everywhere, only to be true to the dance floor. “From day dot to the most modern interpretations, it’s always been about authentic house,” Clark insists. In a scene that’s often driven by hype, WOLF has built something more enduring: a label with its own pulse.
