Behind The Label: Kompakt
From record shop to global tastemaker, Kompakt has defined Cologne’s electronic scene for over two decades with its bold sound, DIY ethos, and community-first approach.

Kompakt isn't just a label – it's a whole ecosystem born from the heart of Cologne's underground. What started in 1993 as a techno record shop called Delirium evolved into a full-blown music hub by 1998, thanks to the efforts of Wolfgang Voigt, Jürgen Paape, and Michael Mayer. Mayer, who caught the DJ bug at 12 after hearing italo-disco, helped shape Kompakt's distinct sound in the '90s – a dreamy strain of minimal techno that took off and started filling the airwaves across Germany and abroad.
But this relentless commitment to sonic exploration didn't stop there. The label combined minimal techno with glam rock, German Schlager music, and a variety of other genres. They signed artists over park hangs and pizza sessions, always chasing that balance between experimental and club-ready. It became home to globally revered acts like DJ Koze, Superpitcher, WhoMadeWho, GusGus, The Orb, Patrice Bäumel, The Field, LA Fleur, Kölsch, and many more.
While Berlin grabbed headlines, Kompakt quietly built Cologne into a global hub for dance music. Now 500+ releases deep, it remains fiercely independent, creatively restless, and proudly doing things its own damn way.
