Feature: Efdemin breaks his silence

Patience is a virtue, but often in electronic music when artists hit the big time and record label offers come flooding in they take the money and ride the hype wave until the end.

Not Efdemin. Since his self-titled debut album blew up last year (it was voted one of the finest albums of 2007), we haven’t heard a bleep or a beat of original material from Phillip Sollmann for nearly 18 months.

Efdemin [a] finally decided to break his silence two weeks ago with a new EP ‘America/The Pulse’ on Belgian label Curle Recordings [l], and quickly followed up with his debut mix album ‘Carry On - Pretend We Are Not In The Room’ on the same label.

Both releases see Efdemin back at the top of his game, so Beatportal sent Sven von Thülen to Berlin to find out where Efdemin [a] has been hiding.

Featured interview: Secretsundaze’s Giles Smith and James Priestley

To establish a series of parties is one thing. But to keep it fresh and growing over seven years is something entirely different.

London’s Secretsundaze crew with resident DJs Giles Smith and James Priestley achieved exactly that; molding their daytime party into an internationally acclaimed, hedonistic brand including a record label. And in the process they have re-established Sunday as one of the main rave-days of the week.

Ricardo Villalobos compiles his two-part ‘Vasco EP’ on CD

These days the CD format is the king of kings when it comes to the music of Ricardo Villalobos [a].

Simply because once you press that play button, you can get lost in his psychedelic excursions into the trippiest corners of the techno and house universe without having to flip the record every now and then.

And once in a while there is a track that Ricardo Villalobos finds worthy to be released in its entire length - like his epic ‘Fizheuer Zieheuer’, a mesmerizing 40-minute odyssey.

Well, there is another time-defying epic about to be unleashed.

First dubstep documentary on DVD

Dubstep has been one of the most exciting musical melting pots over the last few years.

From the techno-tinged outings of 2562 [a] to the deep percussive onslaughts of Shackleton [a], from Burial’s enigmatic and haunting garage and early rave days nostalgia to the genre-bending works of people like Scuba [a], Mala, Martyn [a] or T++ [a], dubstep has always kept the pace, exploring new sonic territories.

Finally the brooding dubstep scene becomes its first documentary.

At the beginning of the year the Minus posse announced ‘10 weeks of silence’, a period in which none of the Minus artists performed live or got behind the turntables to focus on spending time in the studio, having a personal life and whatnot.

Top label: Mojuba

Looking back, 2005 was a good year for house music.

Why?

Dixon started Innervisions as his own offshoot in the Sonar Kollektiv family, releasing Ame’s now classic ‘Rej’, Carl Craig remixed Theo Parrish’s ‘Falling Up’, and Don Williams started Mojuba [l] [check out Mojuba’s backcatalogue after the jump].
