Flying Lotus drops 69 tracks for Essential Mix

Following on from the success of his longplayer ‘Los Angeles’ (check it in the player), revered leftfield master Flying Lotus took BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix to another, more blissful level this week with a sardine-packed tracklist that contains no less than 69 tracks.

In the two-hour window he was given he dropped jumbled up electronica loops, drifting instrumentals and sunny broken beat dreams; as well as poked fun at the British institution’s high brow reputation.

Check the ridiculously long tracklist after the jump and then listen to his mix again - it’s nothing less than a work of art, we think.

Production Master Class: Automation

After a brief US holiday break, our master classes are back in session.

In this lesson, a bevy of EDM’s top producers reveal their insights into the process of automating tracks.

By automating effects and synth parameters, producers keep things interesting by constantly changing sounds and textures as a track progresses to its peak.

Some artists discuss their approach using broad theoretical brushstrokes, while others go much deeper into the specifics of the various tools in their arsenal.

Either way, these insights are sure to help producers of all skill levels add intensity and drama to their mixes.

Weekend Weapons…Sebo K

This week’s Weekend Weapons piece features an upfront selection from Mobilee Records’ Sebo K.

Having built up a solid reputation during 2007 thanks to numerous killer club cuts, the Berlin based DJ/producer has had a comparatively quiet 2008, although he did find time to release ‘Diva’, one of the biggest and most widely supported tracks of the year.

This weekend’s gigs saw him embark on a UK-based double header, headlining Phonica Records’ huge birthday celebration at Corsica Studios in London alongside Prins Thomas, then traveling up to Liverpool for Mumu @ Club So on Saturday.

Here are the three biggest dancefloor destroyers from Sebo K’s weekend.

TV Friend (Hot Chip Remix)

Who Made Who [Gomma]

Who Made Who, those maniac Danish characters who like to dress up in the oddest outfits and do covers of Benny Benassi are back with a new album and super Hot Chip remix.

Hot Chip, as you may well have accurately noted, seem to have remixed literally everyone recently; they hear a track, they remix it, that’s how they roll.

Technicolour

Metrik [Viper Recordings]

Sounding familiar already? Yes Metrik has taken the same Nina Simone sample as used by Layo & Bushwacka on their massive ‘Love Story’ record and used it in this futuristic, up-beat drum & bass anthem.

Metrik joins the long list of artists this year to have taken the wonderful vocal talents of Nina and this time we see ‘Rags & Old Iron’ used on a high energy, techy drum & bass tune.

Empire In Decline / Third Piece

Peter Van Hoesen [Time To Express]

It’s been a good year for Brussels-based Peter Van Hoesen, whose gritty, abstract approach to dancefloor techno has won him plaudits from across the techno spectrum.

This third outing on his own Time To Express imprint sees Van Hoesen doing what he does best - no-nonsense, gimmick-free gear that’s ominously sinister and deeply alluring in equal measure.

10 days of dance music in January: BPM Festival, Mexico

Dance festivals are doing good if they manage to keep going for two days, but The BPM Festival in Mexico thinks 10 days is more like it.

Running from January 2nd till January 11th 2009 at the stunning beachside location of Playa del Carmen, BPM’s clubbers will push on through the pain barrier with a diet of sunshine, upfront techno and summery house music. Poor them.

Considering it’s in January, there probably isn’t a dance music fan out there who doesn’t want to leg it to Mexico.

The New World

Markus Schulz [Coldharbour Recordin...

This week’s trance recommendation was a toss up between DJ Preach’s ‘The Bailout’ and Markus Schulz’ ‘The New World’. However, it was ‘The Bailout’s’ similarity to Energy 52’s ‘Café del Mar’ that swung the vote in Schulz’ favour.
