Electro meets rap with ‘Jam On It’ by Newcleus
20 May, 2008 | 3.10PMThe year was 1984.
The early sound of electro had a fateful meeting with Brooklyn-style rap via the collective Jam-On Productions.
It started with ‘Jam On Revenge’ and somehow made its way to what we know today as ‘Jam On It’, and Jam-On Productions somehow became Newcleus.
Miraculously, as this video demonstrates, ‘Jam On It’ is as fresh today as ever.
Which means that their upcoming Detroit appearance for Movement this weekend should be just in time.

Video: Duran Duran dig into their dance roots
14 May, 2008 | 8.46PMDuring their recent US touring stint for their latest album ‘Red Carpet Massacre’, synth pop (and of course pop) stadium legends Duran Duran pulled out this cut from their vast catalog of music.
The combination ‘All She Wants Is’ — taken from their 1988 album ‘Big Thing’ — combined with a cover of 1978’s ‘Warm Leatherette’ by The Normal (Mute record label founder Daniel Miller’s early act) was a stunning departure from their normally animated selves as performers on stage while at the Wells Fargo Theatre in Denver, Colorado this week.

Interview with J. Scott G. and Shriekback frontman Barry Andrews
4 February, 2008 | 1.05PMJ. Scott G., formerly one half of Deepsky, has recently remade the classic Shriekback monster ‘Nemesis’.
We asked him for his inspiration, and he did us one better and talked with Shriekback frontman Barry Andrews himself about the remake of the song.
Here’s what J. Scott G. (pictured below) had to say about why he remade the song, followed by his conversation with Barry Andrews.
-
I remember growing up with ‘Nemesis’ in the 1980s.
That chorus was so damn catchy, I couldn’t get it out of my head!
This was definitely around the time I started hearing bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, OMD and The Smiths, so all of this music was magical to me.
I knew at 10 years old that I was going to be making electronic music the rest of my life, and tunes like ‘Nemesis’ were a big part of why.
A few years ago, I took a shot at doing a bootleg remix of it, but it didn’t really come out all that well.
Then, about 6 months ago, I was talking to my label partner John, and mentioned wanting to take another crack at a remix and he was like, “Well why don’t you try getting a hold of the band and see if they wont re-sing it for you?”
