Detroit Techno Tourist: Motown Historical Museum

Have you ever wondered just why Detroit techno oozes with such a heavy dose of soul?

Written in between the lines of the relatively recent music form is a historical reference that steps its way quite easily into the electronic world, and it goes by the name of Motown.

Fortunately for us, although Motown moved its official label HQ to Los Angeles in the 1970s, we have a blueprint of the operation that’s still found in Detroit called the Motown Historical Museum.

Kenny Larkin returns to Movement with a new album on Planet E

After a four year album hiatus, Kenny Larkin releases ‘Keys, Strings and Tambourines’ on Carl Craig’s Planet E Communications — and Beatportal has a preview of its sound.

It’s a fitting pairing, as the two DJs and producers are credited as being a part of what’s called “the second wave” of Detroit techno, following the genre’s founding fathers.

Both Carl Craig and Kenny Larkin perform at this weekend’s Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival.

Detroit Techno Tourist: Packard Plant

It’s not everyone’s idea of a good time to visit or even to set your eyes upon an abandoned building.

But this particular abandoned building, known as the Packard plant, has done a thing or two in the formation of the techno scene in Detroit.

The Packard automotive plant, the first concrete building designed by architect Albert Kahn in 1907, is no place to take your grandparents — unless they’re from Detroit and know of the automotive origins of the place.

Interview: Dubfire and the Detroit Connection

Many within the scene have known the name Deep Dish for quite a while.

Within Detroit techno in particular, the label run by the duo (also known as Deep Dish) enlisted Carl Craig for a remix for BT — then known as Brian Transeau — for an effective Urban Affair version of ‘The Moment of Truth’ in 1993.

And since then, Craig has been a supporter of many things Deep Dish, and in particular of one half of the duo, Dubfire himself.

“Carl has been very instrumental in getting exposure for our productions with remixes and things like that by giving his name and support to some of the early releases — I’ve always been indebted to Carl,” Dubfire tells Beatportal.

But the Detroit buck, so to speak, doesn’t stop with Craig alone.

Detroit Techno Tourist: Techno Boulevard

It’s not exactly within walking distance from Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival (not for Detroit, anyway), but it’s definitely one of the reasons the festival even exists.

Techno Boulevard, although not listed on any type of official city tourist guide, was, at one time, home to a few of the genre’s groundbreaking record labels — Transmat, KMS and Metroplex among them.

Detroit Techno Tourist: The Music Institute

Ask any one of the founders and subsequent second-wave techno visionaries and they’ll all point to the same place as part of essential history: The Music Institute.

Carl Craig, still one of Detroit’s key music ambassadors has described it as “the Paradise Garage and Ron Hardy’s club all in one, in Detroit.”

Before sadly but accurately adding, “And kids don’t have that these days.”

Detroit Techno Tourist: The series

You’ve arrived in Detroit for Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival.

You’ve heard lots of things about the city that seems to breed confusion on many levels within the media and public opinion.

But you’ve yet to see for yourself what it all means.

What much of the world doesn’t know is what you’re about to find out — that Detroit is rich with an underground culture that’s fit for only the purest of hearts and the most adventurous of souls.

Electro meets rap with ‘Jam On It’ by Newcleus

The year was 1984.

The early sound of electro had a fateful meeting with Brooklyn-style rap via the collective Jam-On Productions.

It started with ‘Jam On Revenge’ and somehow made its way to what we know today as ‘Jam On It’, and Jam-On Productions somehow became Newcleus.

Miraculously, as this video demonstrates, ‘Jam On It’ is as fresh today as ever.

Which means that their upcoming Detroit appearance for Movement this weekend should be just in time.

Final: Beatport Stage line-up for Movement 2008 in Detroit

The full line-up for Movement 2008 (the festival formerly known as DEMF) is revealed for the artists performing on the Beatport Stage for the entire weekend.

The annual affair, taking place on the riverside of Hart Plaza in the heart of downtown Detroit over Memorial Day Weekend, features artists heard on a premium sound system from both near and far.

This year’s roster is proving to be far more diverse and wide-ranging than ever.

In addition to the previously announced artist line-up that includes original DEMF co-founder Carl Craig, Cobblestone Jazz, DBX (Daniel Bell), Egyptian Lover and Speedy J, the Beatport Stage adds both more established and up-and-coming acts into the mix.

Some of the artists appearing on the Beatport Stage this year include live sets from Par Grindvik, Deadmau5, Alex Under, Heartthrob and Mathias Kaden, plus DJ appearances by Konrad Black, Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin, Davide Squillace, Josh Wink, Dubfire and more.

The full Beatport Stage line-up for Movement 2008 is found after the jump.

Video: Duran Duran dig into their dance roots

During their recent US touring stint for their latest album ‘Red Carpet Massacre’, synth pop (and of course pop) stadium legends Duran Duran pulled out this cut from their vast catalog of music.

The combination ‘All She Wants Is’ — taken from their 1988 album ‘Big Thing’ — combined with a cover of 1978’s ‘Warm Leatherette’ by The Normal (Mute record label founder Daniel Miller’s early act) was a stunning departure from their normally animated selves as performers on stage while at the Wells Fargo Theatre in Denver, Colorado this week.
