Biography:

The record label commited to releasing quality soul and jazz influenced music for dancefloors!

Currently on the books are FUNKANALA, YAM WHO and MOTIVATORS which feature MANU DIBANGO’s rhythm section!

New signing to HERE AND NOW RECORDINGS is CHANAN HANSPAL who has written and recorded a project that features Imaani from Incognito on vocals and a Yam Who? Rework.
Here And Now Recordings was set up in 2005 by John Cunningham, Soul, Jazz and Dance music buyer in Reckless Records, Berwick Street, London with the aim to release organic dance music. The first project combined African rhythms with jazz and dance music.

FUNKANALA are a collective made up of Senegalese drummers, dancers, singers and musicians including Omar Diop, Lena Diop and Olli Sarr plus British Jazz session greats such as Mornington Lockett and Andy Panayi. Also to feature in the Funkanala recordings were Andy Kremer on upright bass; who has played with TERRY CALLIER and NITIN SAWHNEY; guitarist Mark van der Gucht from GALLIANO and Robin Lee from FAZE ACTION playing electric bass. This was all recorded in London by Jim Hawkins from US3, Blue Note Records, and produced by Jim Hawkins and John Cunningham.

Here And Now Recordings debut 12 inch release was picked up by the notable house music label DEFECTED RECORDS and the FUNKANALA track “Economy Class” appeared on their Miami 06 compilation cd. To follow up this up Here And Now Recordings put out an additional Funkanala vinyl single with a remix of the album track “Babakar” from BOSTON RODRIGUEZ, also known as, Darren from nujazz, broken beat, soulful house and general promoters and supporters of the West London Sound, GOYA MUSIC. Boston Rodriguez wove the funky afro house cut “Babakar” into a afro boogie gem with his fantastic production skills. This was then distributed worldwide by HONEST JONS.

2007 was a busy year for Here And Now Recordings as it also saw the debut FUNKANALA album “Be there Tomorrow” hit the shops plus the signing of credible soul and house music producers YAM WHO. Alongside JAZZANOVA, AS ONE, PLATINUM PIED PIPERS, GREYBOYS and ROY DAVIS Jr they have recorded for the monumental UBIQUITY RECORDS and standing side to side with DJ SPINNA, BLAZE, OSUNLADE, JON CUTLER, FRESH & LOW and MODAJI have worked with fine purveyors of soulful house sounds PAPA RECORDS. Additionally, Yam Who have produced for JOSS STONE, JOHN LEGEND, RAPHAEL SAADIQ from TONY! TONI! TONE! and LUCY PEARL, JAZZY JEFF and the FRESH PRINCE (none other than WILL SMITH) and ZERO 7 aswell as remixing for COUNTERPOINT RECORDS, WAH WAH 45s and GENUINE.

For Here And Now Recordings Yam Who recorded two tracks that were to come out initially as a vinyl release then later as digital. The first a cover version of an obscure disco record called “You Don’t Care About Our Love”, additionally done by an artist known as CHINA BURTON. The B-Side, a dubby disco compositon written by Andy Williams from Yam Who, by the name of “Flunky Gone Punky”.

MOTIVATORS were the next project to be signed to Here And Now Recordings. This all-star group boasts MANU DIBANGO’s rhythm section plus MAX GRUNHARD from IMPOSSIBLE ARK RECORDS, HANNAH KEMOH on vocals from REEL PEOPLE and was recorded at both a studio in Paris and the FAZE ACTION studio in London. Again, initially a vinyl release in early 2008, the Here side is a fast jazzy cosmic funk affair and on the Now side a brassy afrobeat number.

Here And Now Recordings are currently in talks with other parties for future releases. Watch this space!
