Macworld 2009: Apple’s latest production tools
Yesterday, Apple announced significant upgrades to several of their products, notably the iLife suite of media software, the more office-oriented iWork, and their high-end 17-inch MacBook Pro.
For DJs and producers, the highlights are GarageBand ‘09 and the new MacBook Pro.
When Apple revved the MacBooks and MacBook Pro last fall, the top-of-the-line 17-inch MacBook Pro was conspicuously overlooked, leading many industry insiders – Beatportal included – to presume that Apple had a major upgrade planned for this month’s Macworld.
True to form, that’s exactly what happened.

Prophet VS Tech Trivia
Dave Smith is best known for creating the Prophet 5 synth, Pro-FX (the first programmable multi-effects unit), and well, the invention of MIDI itself.
But his contributions to synthesis extend far beyond those three achievements.
For example, in the mid-’80s, Dave followed up the original all-analog Prophets with an instrument called the Prophet VS.
The VS was extremely advanced for its time, combining four digital oscillators – each capable of a wide range of harmonic spectra – with analog filters and a unique new way to control the sound in real-time: a joystick.

2008 Technology Top 10
As the year finally comes to a close, it’s time for one more Beatportal Best Of.
2008 was an extremely innovative year for production tools, so our annual Top 10 of Tech focuses not only on the “best,” but just as important, the most groundbreaking products.
Because, like producers and DJs, tools that seem edgy and odd at first often become the most influential.
Don’t believe us?
Think back to 2001, when a tiny start-up in Berlin called Ableton created a niche software product that delivered time-stretching and audio manipulation via an exotic real-time user interface.
Only a handful of geeky producers “got it” at the time.
So as you ponder the winners, remember that our focus goes beyond features and functionality, taking futurism into consideration, as well.

Production Master Class: The Whoosh
One of the most requested class topics to date involves something producers affectionately refer to as “The Whoosh.”
That’s just a fun, onomatopoetic way to refer to those transitional sounds that are reminiscent of wind, waves and other assorted natural (and unnatural) rises and falls.
In honor of the wintry season that’s upon us, our holiday lesson in production techniques will focus on creating the sound of The Whoosh.
[Cue transitional effect]

Image Line Software updates Edison
When is a VSTi not a VSTi?
When it’s an audio editor.
The Image Line elves have clearly been busy with the holiday goodies, as their latest announcement will attest.
Edison, their wave editing and audio recording tool is now available in both VSTi and standalone versions for Windows-based production systems.
More interestingly, Image Line announced that the program is no longer part of their Juice Pack plug-in suite, and will be sold separately from now on.

Image Line Software releases Gross Beat
Image Line, makers of FL Studio, recently announced the latest entry in their line of plug-in effects, Gross Beat.
Designed for stutter and scratch-like effects, Gross Beat stores audio in a 2-bar rolling buffer controlled by 36 time and 36 volume mapping envelopes.
What’s that mean in plain English?
Basically, take a shot of BT, add a dash of Q-Bert, shake vigorously and pour all over your tracks.

MOTU announces Traveler-Mk3
MOTU’s Traveler audio interface has been a favorite of mobile producers since it was originally released several years ago.
So much so that it’s won an award or two.
With the release of the Traveler-Mk3, they’ve added a slew of improvements and amenities that continue to set it apart from the pack.
With eight channels of up to192kHz analog recording and playback - combined with twenty channels of digital I/O in ADAT optical, AES/EBU and S/PDIF formats - the Mk3 is definitely one of the most full-featured FireWire boxes available.
